So glad I checked the tire pressure!

I'm reporting from Candy Hill CG, in Winchester, VA... Almost didn't make it..

After getting home from work, I hitched up the fiver and moved it into the driveway, to load it up and check the tire pressures. My son went to pull one of the Pressure Pro sensors off and the entire brass core of the valve stem shot out with it!

I heard the air blowing and came around to that side of the camper. He had the most awful look on his face! He gave me the sensor and stem core and I quickly shoved it back into the rubber part. Within a second, it shot back out again. I removed the sensor from the brass part and put the core in for a second time. I asked him to hold it, while I went looking for a possible fix. I found some hose clamps, but they wouldn't work. I shoved the brass core as far as I could, into the rubber and checked the other valve stems. Three of the four, shot out of the rubber on me!

Keep in mind, that the Apple Blossom Festival is this weekend, so everybody was closed. The local CAT truck shop said they couldn't do such small tire work. I also couldn't find any 24hr roadside repair places, that would work for us. Kitty called several tire shops, but they were all closed.

Kitty then called her son and he knew of someone that could help us. He lives in the next county over, but was at the house in less than 25 minutes! I jacked the side of the fiver up enough, to take most of the weight off the tires. He took his tire hammer and broke the bead on each tire loose one at a time. He then changed out each valve stem.

The whole process took less than 30 minutes and we were ready to go!

Kitty took pics, but we haven't uploaded them from the camera yet. I am sooooooo glad, I checked the TP! Had one of these cores come out on the interstate, it could have been catastrophic! These stems were just put in on 12/17/09, when we had the tires put on. I guess they must have been in a cheap batch of china junk.

The guy that fixed ours, also gave me some advice... He said that if you put any kind of metal caps on your valve stems, use a bit of anti-seize on them too. This will help prevent them sticking.

Sounds like they didn't use high pressure valve stems. It's recommended to use metal valve stems if using tire pressure sensors.

I'm sure they didn't use quality stems. They were regular passenger car stems, but the glue didn't hold.

I asked the guy about metal stems, but he didn't have any with him. He also said that the only stems (Other than these) that had failed like this, were on calcium filled tractor tires.

Gary

Please post a pic of the stem when you can. With all 3 of them going out they sound like the standard lower pressure stems.

You are so fortunate to have found that in your yard. And the guy who fixed it in your yard.... AMAZING and Priceless!!!

John

Don't know a thing about valve stems but would love a review of Candy Hill. On RV Park Reviews there are people who say it wonderful and some who say it's terrible. Usually there's a general agreement, but not on this one.

HI Pam,

Candy Hill is a very neat clean campground. They have employees that ride around on golf carts just keeping an eye on the place.

Sites on average are large enuff for your rig and awning to be out. Not a whole lot wider than that. Depending what you want to spend there are different "amenities" available at different sites.

If we had not been meeting up with Chuck McNair (previous (original) owner of our 5th wheel we would not have gone there.

I think it's a great place if you plan to park your rig and be gone all day to sight see, but not my ideal of a place to go sit and just hang outside chilling' & relaxing.

No this was Apple Blossom weekend, but one poor guy was parked parallel to the gravel road and when he opened his awning it was just about out in the road.

Too much like sardines in a can for me.

Their store is great if you should happen to need anything and don't feel like driving across the street to WalMart.

The young man that assisted with backing us in did an excellent job.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Kitty

Thanks Kitty. As you know we usually stay in my brother's driveway, but that has no sewer hook up, and we thought Candy Hill might be a good location to have hookups while visiting them. Sounds like we'll keep using the driveway and the porta potti
