Gee guys, thanks for the kind words. I’m humbled.

We have a special place here on SOC and helping your fellow camper is just part of the same camping sprit that any one of us would give freely at a campground by just asking. We all have our special things to give. May our virtual campfire always burn bright.

Thanks

John

That statement deals with making absolutely sure the manufacturer will not have anything to do with compensation from a failure dealing with a design that is not self protected. Those types of responses many times stem from a lot of field complaints and maybe even a few warranty payouts originally. Or by realizing the problem and then rather then creating a fix that does not self destruct, they put a warning on it. By creating a warning in there manual they created a get out of jail free card.

There are ways to design around this specific problem.

1. At a minimum, they could of posted a warning label on the actual crank handle so you see it before you use it.

2. The crank handle could of incorporated a simple over load clutch just like what is in the actual slide motor that is set to the max torque allowed before self destruction starts. This may be the better solution as there may be times you need a little more torque then the main system motor.

2a. Put a simple shear pin in the handle when max damaging forces are approaching. Bascially a mechanical fuse.

3. The gear box could have been made to have the manual crank work with the clutch it has, not direct to the ACME screw drive which is where the problem comes from.

Coming from a machinery background, I myself have a real hard time with just listing that note in the manual when an effective low cost alternative could have been provided with something that has so much potential for damage. After I saw, felt and actually measured how little amount of force can be put on the crank handle and literally damage something, I myself was shocked. You have got to be kidding me! They actually let this thing be able to do this?

Some time when you have a moment, open the slide 1/2 way and try the crank. Since my running torque was only 25 in lb. on the ACME screw for just normal moving of the slide once off of each end or travel, that would equate to 2.75 pounds of push force on that 9” long manual crank. You can do it with 1 finger…. It is that sensitive and the mechanical advantage is really that high.

For every one not so into numbers, treat your manual slide crank just like you do your Wingard Batwing antenna. It literally cranks that easy. And when it starts getting much harder, stop or else something is going to break! Except in this case it can be a lot more money then a Wingard antenna.

John

John,
I love your idea of the shear pin! It's too bad that the penny-pinchers couldn't have incorporated something..... Anything, to help prevent such a potentially costly problem, from even being a possibility.

Kitty and I winterized the 320 today and there's still a lot of mud around the camper. It may be a few days, before I can even get under it for a look-see. Knowing the track record of the dealer we bought it from, I'm almost worried what I might find.

Kathy, does that indicate that we were both having Sunline winterization syndrone, and already need a SUNLINE fix

And now this shear pin issue, makes me "hope" that moving up to a slide room Sunline will not be trouble (trouble I could do without). BUT, I gotta ADMIT, I love this Sunline for all the room it has, and still so many mods yet for me to dream up and complete.

Kitty, do not let this issue cloud your thougths of having a slide. Is a slide a level of more to know and learn, yes. But the pro's far outweigh the con's. Having that extra 30 some inches of width is just great.

Knowing what you yourself worked thru on your other Sunnies, this slide is nothing to fear. It is to enjoy. And we do all the time. Cindy will not go back to the non slide now...

The cutom touches, yes we still have many. I have enough at least for 2 more years until I think some more...

Kitty,

Based on John's excellent analysis and information I believe my problem was self inflected and that there isn't a problem with the system as long as you maintain extreme caution if and when manually extracting or retracting the slide (and ensure you're cranking in the proper direction).

I’m chalking this experience up as being the guinea pig for a lessons learned for others (i.e., what not to do).

Therefore, as JohnB indicated, you have nothing to be concerned about.

JohnB & Hutch,

Well, you both have made me feel better about this slide situation. And Gary is always telling me "It'll be ok, Sweetie" So, hopefully that worry is gone, HUM, now what mod would/should I tackle next ?????

I know, I gotta look around the home office area (we combined all of our clutter, OOPS I mean desk paperwork) and I gotta find that paper for DMV to submit my request to change my truck license plate from "BON" to something NEW

I got a message tonight from MaryAnn & David (Rebellious7 and they pulled into a campground in Harrisburg and I'm guessing they had this exact thing happen. Brackets bent and the slide won't go out. David said he was able to push the room in for the night (since I guess it's supposed to rain).

Anyone have any good suggestions for temporary fixes to at least lock the room for travel?

Transit bars. But if the slide actuator is broke, then use 4 slide lock bars. 2 Up top and 2 down at the bottom on both ends of the slide. And check often and slow over bumpy roads that thye do not fall out.

If the actual slide actuator is ripped off the brackets, need to wire that up so it does not bend off or take it completly out.

I have never attempted to by hand push a slide that big in. If the camper is a 2005 or newer, they roll/slide in easier then the 04 and older ones.

Hope this helps

John

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but using the search brought me here. The gears on my actuator broke and I do not know where to buy new ones. It is the same as the gears pictured in thread #17 by JohnB. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

No worries on asking in this thread. You came bearing pics!!! Great, now we know what you need. I do believe you have a 2003 camper, correct?

That would be the Venture slide motor drive system. Count the teeth but I believe you are looking for the 18:1 gear ratio.

Like this

If so, see here for parts. Make sure you get the 18:1 set. Odds are high, you new set will look like mine (2004 camper) where the clutch gear is all metal, not like your older one, part metal, part plastic.

These are the guys who made the gear drive. Do not know if they will sell parts direct. Try a call. I did called them years back and they gave me good tech service, just I did not buy anything from them.
Linear Actuators Products - Venture Mfg Co

Here on the Lippert Store. May want to call them. I cannot tell how to only order the 18:1 set. That price looks like it might be more then 1 set
Lippert Components|RV Accessories|Electric Slide-Out Replacement Parts

Here is another one. I have bought from these folks with good luck. Just not slide parts.
AP Products Slide-Out 18:1 Venture Replacement 53 Teeth Gear Set - Slide-Out Parts - Hardware

And another. I have been in this store in Elkhart. Where I could see what I was buying. Just I never bought on line. They are a big surplus place with stuff everywhere and sort of all over.
014-191072 - Venture Replacement Gear Set (18:1) - Price: $59.00 - Factory RV Surplus - 1611 W Bristol St, Elkhart, IN 46514 (800) 325-1461 (574) 262-3327

And here. Bought from these folks with good luck
AP Products Replacement Lippert Slideout Parts

And these folks. They are based out of Ohio. Bought with very good service from them.
Lippert 045-191072 Venture Motor Replacement Gear Set

Hope this helps and good luck

John

JohnB! You are awesome!

Yes I have a 2003, Sunline M-345.

I had contacted RVupgrades.com yesterday which is the last link you posted. They got right back to me and told me to measure my gears to make sure they were the same diameter as their replacement gears, they are and now that you have listed them also I am going to go ahead and buy a set from them,
Lippert 045-191072 Venture Motor Replacement Gear Set

Thank you! I will let you know how it turns out.

Gee, thanks Glad it helps.

Yes, RVUpgrades has their act together with the customer service. I bought from them years ago when they where just starting out. Their inventory was a fraction of what it is today.

I was buying a surge protector. Seems they had a mix up and kept sending me the 50 amp version when I was ordering the 30amp. Called and they sent a new out out in a heart beat, even before the 50 amp one returned. Then the 2nd one came... and it too was a 50... They where so apologetic it was unbelievable. So out another one come, with 2 packing slips prepaid UPS returns. Seems the place they obtain them from marks the outside shipper box with the wrong part number and would not have known unless you tear down the brown shipping box. Mistakes happen, the character of the individuals and company how they stand behind their customer makes them who they are.

They ended up giving me a $50 gift card just for being patient.

I have bought again several times and as they have grown, the same grass roots good company sustains. Glad to still see this in this day and age. Service sells.

Slide Thru the Frame Venture Actuator Bent Brackets, Bent Stop Can

Hello from Gene Texas.
Last year I'd bought a used 2015 Grand Design Reflection 317RST 5th wheel trailer.
Zero experience with RVs of any kind.
While learning how to work on the 5er, did a lot of web searching.
Found this forum following trail thru RV.net on tire wear, axle, suspension, brakes, and slide out problems.
Had a few messages back & forth between John Barca about his frame repair project last year, and then about this slide problem.

The 1st owners of this 5er had a problem with the right hand slide not working and had the 5er in for repairs for several months before work was completed.

I was tracking down a squeaking sound on this slide when it's almost retracted. Got to looking again at the actuator as I saw it's hung off its mount at an angle.

The original fix by the RV dealer had included enlarging the hole in the frame plate the actuator tube passes thru, and bending back the edges of the stop can & cutting off the bottom edge.

I'd found a tech guidance pdf that added some info to what John had figured out.
https://dealers.forestriverinc.com/D...ide_Adjust.pdf

So I started out by removing the slide's bent trunnion brackets to straighten them out & see about why the need to enlarge the hole thru the frame and cut & deform the stop can.

Slide Thru the Frame Venture Actuator Bent Brackets, Bent Stop Can

With the actuator remounted and level, checked where the tube goes thru the frame. The RV repair center had cut the lower and right side edges of the plate the actuator tube goes thru, then cut and screwed on steel patches to meet the edges of the stop can's bent edges.
They'd left a small crescent piece of the frame bent inward. I had seen this in a photo from last year but didn't realize that's what it was.
I flexed it till it broke off & removed it.
