Shuddering (?) trailer brakes

I have a 2006 Solaris T-2363 with a brake problem. When I initiate braking with either the foot brake or controller the trailer goes through a lock, release, lock, release cycle that is quite scarey. I got home by basicaly turning the controller down so that the trailer brakes were virtualy off, but that is hardly a solution. Ideas?

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be chaffed wires running through the axle. It's a fairly common problem. JohnB has a good thread on here showing how to fix it.

If I pulled a little of the slack in the wires, the chaffed areas weren't rubbing and brakes were fine. Of course this was just a short lived thing as the wires would settle back onto the metal and short.

Thanks for response. I havent found the JohnB link yet, I suppose it comes down to doing as you say and if it solves the problem, replacing the wires.

Independent Brake Wire Feed Upgrade

I followed John's procedure to do the same upgrade on the 2499. These wires really don't last that long--I'm guessing the 2499 was only 5 years old, but towed about 5000 mi./yr. Higher mileage would induce more chaffing. As well the bundle of wires with crimp nuts, that feed into the brake drums, have no support from bouncing around over bumps. That's actually where my wires broke, but I decided to do the whole re-wire figuring the wires inside the axles weren't going to last much longer anyway.

Be sure not to buy too small plastic tubing. Pushing 8' of wire into the tubing is a lot more difficult than testing how easily 1' slides in when you're in the store.

Thanks for link and heads-up about the tubing.

Some controllers will throw a code if your brakes do strange things. If you want to protect the wires inside of the tube I would use 1/4 split loom auto parts stores sell it by the foot.
