Rubber roof

This weekend I discovered that I have a leak in the rubber roof of my 1988 Sunline Satelite. It looks like it is leaking right at the end of the roof (where the roof and wall meet). There apears to be some lap sealant that is starting to fall apart. My plan was to remove the old lap sealant, clean the area, and reapply lap sealant.

Is there a product out there that I can paint over the this area when I'm done? I'm thinking a thick rubber like product that will seal up any pin holes I might have missed. If someone could recomend a product that would be great. I've done some reading on the forum but can't seem to find what i'm looking for.
thanks
Joe

A loto f great reviews about "eternabond", not cheap stuff, but from all that I've read it's basically "once you apply it" your joints are good for years. But, I have no first hand knowledge about the tape, just what I've read.

Dicor is a manufacturer of the rubber roof systems for RV's. They offer a complete line of repair kits, sealants, and cleaning supplies for the rubber roofs. There are also a number of information/instructions sheets that can be downloaded, too.
Check out: http://dicor.com/Roofing.aspx

Eternabond is a great sealing tape for the rubber roofs as well and is manufactured specifically for EPDM rubber roofs. They offer cleaners and sealants, too.
Check out: www.eternabond.com

Both manufacturers offer a coating product that can be "painted" on over a rubber roof. Either would probably be just what you are looking for.

Your local RV dealer may stock one or both product lines. And both websites offer online shopping as well.

If you want lots more info and real world experiences on rubber roofs and maintenance, just use the search function here and search on "dicor" without the quotes. There are a number of good threads on the topic.

JohnB is on a distinguished road
If you go the Eternabond route this site is where I bought my last set of roles.

http://www.bigrocksupply.com/roofing...-c-13_104.html

They showed up promplty and was the cheapest I could find at the time. I needed some for my slide unit where the ends of the roof material meet the slide room walls. Plus my son needed some on his PU roof.

Good luck

John

Thank you both for the helpful information. Can anyone say anything good or bad about the brand Kool Seal? They have a primer and sealer similar to Dicor but at a lower price.

Geesh, my head got to thinking and that's dangerous. But, I didn't think they were using "rubber" roofing in 1988 on Sunlines, but I could be wrong. Maybe it's just a coating someone put on the aluminum roof ??

Interesting that they didn't use rubber roofing back then. It could have been added later. I noticed that the rubber roofing is over the roof vent flanges. I also noticed that there is aluminum under the rubber roof when I installed an AC unit. Do they normally put aluminum under the rubber? Seems like overkill.
I think I might go with the Enternabond solution. It seems like a good product. John thank you for the link, BigRockSupply seems to have the best prices.

I believe that Kitty is right; they didn't start using EPDm until the early to mid 1990's. If your TT has the rubber roof over the roof vent flanges, then it is most definately an add-on at some point in the life of the rig. The roof vent flanges, the plumbing vents, etc. would all have been installed on top of the rubber if it were original or if the add-on installer took the time to do that.

Reason? There may have been some damage to the aluminum that prompted a previous owner to re-cover the entire roof. If it was just a small leak or two, there would not really be a reason to do the whole roof in the expensive EPDM. Lap sealant would have fixed most leaks satisfactorily and permanently.

Roof

When I had my fifth wheel the roof developed leaks at the seam above the back wall. I went out and got Kool Seal and painted the seams all around. It is a white liquid rubber.

The Kool Seal is good stuff as a coating.... But for sealing over seams (where expansion and contraction produces maximum flexing), I would strongly recommend at least the self-leveling Dicor. Although I haven't used Eternabond myself, it comes highly recommended by some of my RVing friends.
