Roof Maintenance

The roof of my 89 1661 is not leaking. I want to keep it that way. How do I properly maintain it? Is there a seam seal to use?

Thanks,
Jim

Metal or Rubber? Given the age of the trailer, I suspect metal.

If you need to seal a seam on the flat, use Dicor Self Leveling caulk. Seams on the vertical use Dicor non-Self Leveling or any good butyl caulk. That holds for both rubber and metal roofs. Remove any peeling caulk, clean well and let dry before applying.

Traditional maintenance of metal roofs is brush off, gently remove any flaking paint (if any), wash and dry, coat with mobile home roof paint which is available at any home improvement store.

Plenty of previous discussions on roof maintenance here for the reading.

It's 1989 with metal roof. Previous owner said it was "seam sealed" but that was years ago. I keep it trapped in winter. Roof is looking a little rough though. Is it OK to crawl on the roof to clean and seal it, or do I need to scaffold over it?

There's probably nothing under the metal except the insulation and joists. I would not walk on it. Instead, get yourself a piece of plywood, maybe 1/2" or 5/8", that is wide enough to span several joists which are either 16" or 24" on center. Put that down on the roof and walk on it.

With a metal roof, I would not be afraid to gently wire brush it to remove loose paint, etc. That or a stiff bristle brush of some kind would be fine. I'd use a putty knife to scrape away old caulk. With a metal roof, you can use some tools that you'd never get near a rubber one.

My '79 Prowler had a metal roof, and as long as I maintained it, it never leaked.

Brake replacement

The brakes on my 89 1651 May be worn out. What replacements should I buy?

Before you buy anything, determine what you need. The only way to do that is pull the drum and examine the shoes. First, examine the shoes for remaining pad material. They may only need adjustment.

If the shoes are worn that bad, pull one and take it to a shop that deals in trailers, especially utility trailers. They are better versed on repairing older brake systems and their prices are much more reasonable that RV shops. Many of those utility trailers on their lots use the same brake/hub/axle systems as on your Sunline. They can supply you with the size shoes for your brakes.

While you have drums pulled, it's time to check the bearings and seals. If they need replacement, the trailer shop will have what you need.

Repack the hubs, too. There are lube points in the brake mechanisms so lube them as well.

Check the magnets and wiring as well.

Put it all back together, replacing the cotter pin if needed. Adjust the brakes and you're set.

The Dexter axle manual is in the files area. Brakes and hubs are part of the axles. That manual will tell you all you need and more. The answer to any question about brakes, hubs, springs, and axles are in the manual. There are also reference charts on bearings and lubrication.

These are simple, old fashioned drum brakes. (My '99 had the exact same axles as your '89.) The only unique part is that they are activated by the magnet instead of a pull cable. They are very easy to work on in your driveway.

Exclamation Brakes

the pic is of my 1989 1661. The primary (short side) is facing the rear if the trailer. The brakes more farther in one rotation than the other. It would make sense that the long throw would be for stopping forward movement, and the short for stopping in reverse. The long throw on mine engages when the wheel are rotating in the backing up direction. The magnets are also on too, not bottom like all the diagrams and videos I have seen. Is this installation wrong? Also, I can't see how to remove the brakes. I can't see any bolts connecting them to the axle.

Jim

No pic came through.

Get the manual and go from there.
