Replacing electric WH element in '06 T-2499

Well, I goofed, and yep, the WH was empty and the switch for the electric side of the WH was turned on for about 20 - 25 minutes. Needless to say, I killed it Need to do this repair myself if at all possible The propane works fine. Anyone had to do this and if so, can you give me any advise?

I know from now on there will be a "sign" by the switch when the WH is empty.

And of course, the heater is in such a convient place.

Thanks for you help,

Kitty

See if this helps.

You are going to have to do some digging to get to the electric element. The digging is the worst part of this job.

I have not replaced mine yet, but know where it is and have replaced on home electric units. This one looks the same.

Here is how I would do it. (Until I rework that darn Luann cover that is….There will be a day soon I can get into that area a lot easier. )

Read this over an only attempt if you feel you can do this on your own. We can help from here, but you are still the one doing it in the field.

Get a cordless drill with a screw driver bit to fit the screws. Take out 4 screws in the couch and completely remove it.

Take off the Luann wood cover. (Note: The first time I took mine off, I no longer screw it back on. Now I can slide it out and reach in to get the HW bypass without having to remove the couch. Still have to deal with the 4" of rug behind the couch, but I can stil get in on.)

Now the HW heater is fairly well exposed. Drain the water out if you have not allready.

Look for the small black 120V electric box on the bottom center back of the heater. See pic below. MAKE sure all 120 is totally off to the HW heater. Turn off the breaker in the panel box or pull the power on the entire camper. Make sure the 12 VDC to the heater is off. If your not sure, turn the battery disconnect switch off.

Open up the black electrical box.

Carefully and gently pull out the wire leads. You will find the 12 volt to 120 VAC relay in there and the 120 V electrical heating element. See pic

The heater has 2 wires on it. Take them both off.

You will need a socket wrench that fits the heater element. Some Home Depot stores have light ones just for heater elements. Looks like this
As liked in from Camco site Camco HW parts

I cannot quickly find the Atwood PN 91160 heating element on the web to show you wht that exact one looks like. That 91160 is in mine and most likely your heater as well. There are only a few companies that make them and I do not know if Atwood makes their own.

See here a pic of a Camco one. Yours will look similar.

As linked from here: Camco element

The key in replacing these if to make sure the wattage is the same. If you can find a brand name and part number on the element, then you may be able to get it locally. It might even be a Camco.

Take out the old, put new gasket on with the new element and hook back up.

Camco also has some good info on elements in there FAQ section. Camoc FAQ’s

Here is the wiring diag as FYI, off the back of the heater. Looks like what is in our manual.

Hope this helps and let us know how you make out.

PS. If and when you get the couch off, pop a few good overall pic’s of the area. These are helpfully to others doing what it is you are doing…. I could even use them myself to help others until I get mine off again. It is such a pain to take that couch out.

John

Thank you so much John, I thought you might be able to give me some help I do plan on totally removing the sofa. Not going to be an easy job, even with the sofa outta the way. I will also be doing a "mod" to make an access panel to the bypass valve. Right now, I lift up the sofa, hold it up with my right shoulder, then I lift up and hold the luan with one hand and reach in to turn the bypass valve with the other hand. As you know, a real acrobatic act.

I have replaced a household heater element, now all I have to do is find that dang wrench. But, I think I might have an idea of where I put it so I could "FIND" it if I needed it again. Ya know, it's in one of those "I'll remember" spots

I will take pics as I go. The all I need to do is figure out how to get them to show up in a post.

Kitty

Glad the info helped point you where to go hunting. If you have done the house ones, well this is not much different. Other than a whole lot closer to the ground….

Now to post a pic. See this post. It might help. If not, ask away.

How to post a pic on Sunline Club

Just have to figure out how to type/talk computer lingo. As long as you do not type 1 character wrong, it all works....

OK, I started the repair/remodel for my W/H. I don't want to be holding up the sofa with a shoulder while trying to flip bypass valves. Here is a pic (hopefully) of the PIA screw. More photos to follow as I progress.

Well I see you figured out how to post a pic.

The "fastner" holding that bad boy down... I did not put the same one back in. I replaced it with a real heavy duty screw I can get a good bite on with my drill and bit and at an angle I can get to it.

Good luck, your 1/2 way in there

John

OUTSTANDING!!!

You get an A Plus.

Great job and thank for sharing the pics. This will help others a lot too.

John

PS The element itself. What brand is it? Was it a Camco? And what wattage was it?

PS 2. The Calucm build up on the element. Yup, hard water does it every time.

Thanks Guys,

I kinda impressed myself, course it's not all back together YET!!

From what I can read on the element, it appears to be a 1400watt Atwood

Kitty,

Good job and great pictures. Although we camp mostly at state parks w/o electric hook-ups you got me thinkinig how much work I would have to go through if that happened to me. On my 289SR the water heater is below the refrigerator behind a cabinet door so it looks more accessable, but I will be checking it out.

Thanks,
Mike

Good idea Mike, just make sure you are checking it out to JUST be checking it out, and not because you have to replace it!! It has been quite a project, and it's not finished yet.

YEEHAW, I have hot water from the electrec element. AND, I have no leaks!! Well, I must say it was quite a job. Of course me doing some extra modifications in the process didn't help matters. I still have some mod work to do, but for now Sunny is "whole" again, as I'm going camping friday thru monday .

Good for you!!! And hat's off to you for doing it yourself. You have done a fine job.

I have also been thinking about your drain hose for your collection pan. You have stirred up some ideas for me for new projects….

Do not know if you drilled thru the floor yet or not, but there may be option 2.

See here in my pic. Look just below the gas copper line. There is a space there.

Now look here on the inside of your camper. Look where the copper gas line exits the inside of the TT.

Is there enough room next to or below the gas line to run a 3/8" drain house out thru the HW heater sheet metal side verse down thru the floor? You can rubber grommet the hose too.

Since your couch is so quick removal now….. you can get yours off quicker than mine to check it if option 2 will work.

May even be able to sneak a small 1/4" polfow tube thru the same rubber groumet as the gas line and no drilling. May have to silicone up the hose to the groument as it will not be a nice round fit.

Maybe this will lead to something you can build on.

Good luck

John

Well Kitty - now you can load her up and head out!

We came back from a weekend trip on Sunday and Leo had his clothes loaded up for Memeorial Day weekend on SUnday night.....wanted to know if I was ready - yea right - & who does he think is doing the laundry???

Anyway - I am spendig the day pre-cooking all the food and packing so we can be out of here 7AM on Thursday morning!

I'm watching all the mods you and John have made as we just bought a 2008 T2499....right now is our busy time (Leo does landscaping & I'm his goffer) but we'll be able to get some things done in a week or two. Unfortunately I have a summer job this year 4 days a week, which is a bummer but it is in a motel office and since we owned 9 cottages on the lake, I figured it was an easy no brainer for me! I've already told the owner that there are certain Saturdays I want off and I almost have Leo convinced that Meet & Greet weekend is one of them....we just need to watch the price of gas, as we are at $3.25 and going up everyday!

OK - so stop ready and go pack!

Just a little update,

I passed by that same station this afternoon and he was up to $3.59. I heard that a little farther down the road it was selling for close to $3.80. Sam's Club had the best deal at $3.46. What a deal!!!
