Really need technical help here..
Here goes..my fridge is toast, we all agree! I would like to replace it with an electric unit. My entry doorway measures only 20 1/8" W...My Dometic RM361 installation guide shows the following:
Overall Width:21 11/16" (yep! thats the door meas.!)
Installation Width: 20 1/4" Install Depth: 20 3/16"
Recess width: 20 1/2"
Obviously if that "installation width" means ACTUAL WIDTH,then I am out of luck..however, Dometic can"t answer that to my satisfaction. They just don't have any other info.
Now, I would think if the recess dimension means the opening for the fridge to go into, it would be pretty hard to slide a fridge into it with only a quarter inch to spare..hard but maybe not impossible. However, none of the stated measurements will go thru my door. I only need one measurement to be wrong to help me out! Does anyone know the true measurement or how to get a correct one without first removing the darned thing!? (Not going to have my brother remove the entry door or risk ammonia burns etc by removing the cooling unit....) Janalee

Hi Janalee,
I did some hunting and it seems the "Recess width: 20 1/2"" Is the cabinet hole width in the camper.
What may help you is if the front flange of the fridge can be unscrewed off the fridge box. Take the doors off then if the door flanges can come off, then what is left might be less then your door. I do not know if there is a real good way to measure the back of the fridge cabinet short of pulling it forward a few inches.
I have not had one of these out so I am only speculating. The fridge needs to come out one way of the other. If you unhook it in the back and unscrew the 2 screws in the back holding it down and the screws in the front, maybe pull the unit out about 3 to 6" and get a good look at. If the fridge door flange will come off and then what is the fridge cabinet width, to see if it will fit through the entry door still in place. If it will, then keep on going in removing it
If it will not fit through the door, and you are not prepared to pull the entry door and reseal it at that time, then push the fridge back in the cabinet hole and put the screws back in if you need to use the camper. Get the door sealing tape bought and ready and come back at this when the timing lines up to pull the door.
Worst case, you have to pull the entry door out. This is normally not that hard to do. I have done several door pulls and installs. This post may help. While you are not dealing with an out of square door, the pics can help on the door pull, clean up and install.
http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...ics-11717.html
Take the door off the hinges first so you do not have all that weight to deal with and the door frame can flex better without the door installed. A heat gun will help to warm the door flange to release the molding from the putty tape. That putty tape can hold on good and strong when it wants to. But adding heat to it will release it with some pulling. Heat the entire flange all the way around before you start pulling and start at the bottom. Do not stand still with the heat gun very long as it can burn the paint etc.
Before the door pull, be prepped with new buytl sealing tape so it can be replaced. Mineral spirits will clean off any old putty tape remains that will not scrape off and then you need to use a high flash cleaner to get the oily film of the mineral spirits off. Lacquer thinner, denatured alcohol or even home isopropyl alcohol will work.
Hope this helps
John

It should fit through the door. Fridge, 21 11/16 door opening 22 1/16. If you remove the plastic trim and the door it will give you about 2" more clearance the frame size is about 20" if you come at the door frame on an angle one trim edge will fit out first giving you another 1/2" . If it did not fit through the door Domedic would have a hard time selling them if they could not get a replacement to fit through the doorway. I would make sure the electric one will though as they were not made for an RV so they don't care about size.

Mainah and JohnB...Thanks to you both! Good ideas again from you guys...after this next couple of rainy days pass I think we have to at least give it a try or I will never get to use this unit without standing at an ice machine! Once you get used to 'convenience' items and you lose them, they become'necessities'..especially at MY age! Lol! Will let you know the outcome! Janalee
SPEAKING OF AGE: I wonder if I might be the eldest member on SOC @ 76 ? Anyone wanting to admit their years, young or old?

Hi Mainah,
Where did you see the entry door was 22 1/16"? I did not see that. I thought Janalee stated her entry door was 20 1/8" wide.
Your 22 1/16" if it is, makes this a whole lot easier... Yes, it will go through that.
Thanks
John

Mainah and John..it is the camper entry door way that is 20 1/8". The fridge door is 22" wide. The fridge itself (without the door)is stated to be 20 1/4" which makes it 1/8" too wide to get it thru the doorway..We are going to try to take it out Wed or Thurs. Will let you now what happens...
My brother had also said it would seem odd for Sunline to not allow for future fridge replacement..
Janalee

I measured mine that's were the figures came from and the fridge too. The smallest door size I know of is a 22" rough opening so yeah a 20" fridge will not fit out that, however the next is a 24" rough that's a more common door so even with the flange that should give you enough room. Janalee are you working on the 1350? that may have a small doorway. In that case it might be easier to remove the front window.

Mainah..it is a 1661..no window large enough if I was even inclined to go that route. Went to WM today and bought a small cube fridge so with my cooler i should be fine. Just no gourmet meals! Lol!

I would go for it I think it will fit worst case you'll have to put it back where it was. All engineers make mistakes but usually they correct it after the fact.

Mainah and JohnB...well, he did it..except for that cooling unit the whole thing is nothing but molded plastic and hard foam insulation..Les (bro) says I have no faith!! Took off metal brackets that could cause some problems..they did take some work..he chopped off most of the insulation and then right through the doorway. Now to find a replacement! Just ordered an Arctic King 3.3 cu ft on WM.com--my choice was a bit limited as I needed a left side hinged door and most of these small ones are not reversible-come with right side hinge. Hope this works out for me-I just hate to have to ask other people do jobs that DH and I really even liked to do! This unit will arrive Wed so maybe, just maybe, I will get to the woods before July!! Lol! Again I thank you for your input and encouragement! Janalee

I knew you could do it I had faith in you. There are some pretty nice DC units out there but they are very pricy if you are always parked at a campground then a dorm fridge is fine while you are traveling just put in stuff you want to thaw for dinner to keep it cool inside until you can plug in.
