Power post voltage and polarity checker

I thought JohnB had sent me a pic of one of these one time, but I guess I saw it somewhere else. I finally got the parts together today and fabbed one up myself.

I took a short 120v power splitter and put a 30A RV plug end on it. The plug cost me ~$8 at Lowes and the cord/splitter was sitting in the garage already.

Once I had the RV end on it, I plugged the voltmeter and polarity tester into the other end. Now, we can test voltage and polarity at a CG, before we risk damaging anything in our rig. Nothing special and very DIY. To me, it sure beats finding out about problems AFTER plugging the rig in!

EDIT: The inside of the plug is clearly marked, as to which wire goes on which terminal. Pretty much Gary-proof!

I have a volt meter plugged in next to the stove all the time. That way I can see what's going on with the power all the time. You would be surprised how much voltage fluctuates during the day in some campgrounds. There are times I have to shut off the electric water heater to bring the voltage back into the green. Also nice on really hot days for watching voltage while running the A/C.

It's also amazing, how much a 1500w heater affects the voltage.. We have two of those voltage meters and one will stay in the camper..

I like that test setup Gary. I always had the test light in the trailer but then I heard about someone that fried some equipment because the polarity was wrong at the post so it made me think it was much better to test at the post before plugging in the trailer. I was in Home Depot today (sorry Kitty) and saw a 30amp to 20 amp adapter. ... it didn't have a maglight with it but I bought it anyway.

Connecticut Electric 20 Amp to 30 Amp RV Adapter

Since you poblished this modification, I have looke all over the internet, Radio Shack, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. to find the plug-in voltmeter shown on the photo. Could you please help me find one. AND, can you make one of these for a 40 amp plug?

Thanks for your help!
