painting straps holding water tank under T2553

Rusting straps holding water tank on T2553. What type of paint do I use? Spray can of Rustolem or brush it on? Anyone else having this problem? Trailer sits out in farmers field during winter months. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Do you mean these straps?

Yes I have had issues with them and the entire TT frame and mine sleeps in the shed.

The tanks straps can be worse as they sweat, the metal gets wet even on sunny days, then corrosion just plain starts.

I did take mine completely off, wire brush, sand the rust off, primed and use Rust-o-leum Pro paint on it and the entire frame.

See this post for more on my painting endeavor. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/ph...opic.php?t=594

HEADS up. If you take that tank strap off, leave the tank in place. Support it with boards etc. The green/white striped hose can leak once you fiddle with the connection. They used Food Grade Silicone as the sealing material. You can buy Aquarium grade, in Home Depot. It is the same FDA rating for food contact. See the little number in the instructions. On the tube and look it up. NOT all Silicone is food grade. If is it not listed on the label as food grade or meets the FDA requirement …., it is not rated to use with potable water.

I have to do this same repaint on my new camper this spring. The paint used at Lippert is not long term.

Good luck.

John

If you don't mind spending the extra money over rustoleum this stuff is awesome we use it at work for rust repairs and have never had anything come back rusting again,I'm currently in the process of doing my truck frame and undercarrige with por-15 and since it looks like we will be keeping our sunline for a few more years I'm going to redo the frame on that with por-15,I originally done it with rustoleum and it held up ok for a few years but If I'm going to do it again I'm using por-15 then I should not have to do it ever again.http://www.por15.com/products.asp?dept=1

Since you have used the POR15, how do you deal with it going over painted surfaces? It says in the directions not to use it over painted surfaces. It never said why, just do not do it. I have never used this product so I can’t comment on it. Hoping maybe you could.

See here on point 10. http://www.por15.com/Data%20Sheets/n...directions.pdf

I have used this Eastwood product before. It is a rust converter. And it too should be painted over. But it does not have this requirement that it cannot be used over paint. It basically stops the rusting action so the paint over it will protect it. http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?i...rID=347&KICKER

And now they have a Rust Encapsulater. There is an article claiming it is better then the POR 15. both claimed to be good , but the Eastwood product has some advantages. I have never used either the Rust Encapsulater or the POR 15 so I can't give 1st hand info
http://www.eastwoodco.com/

On my TT frame, I have some spots that will be mixed sanded rust and paint left. The Eastwood products I can brush cover both areas.

How would I do this on the POR15?

Since we too are keeping the T310 a long time I'm looking at the extra effort. But I still have to top coat either product and would use the Rust-o-elum.

Any info much appreciated.

John

what I do John is scrape and sand as much old paint off as possible, and what little is left behind I paint over with por-15 and never had a problem.the reasoning behind it is that in order for por-15 to stop the rust it needs be on the metal where the rust starts if there is paint between the metal and por-15 it won't allow it to do it's job 100% in them areas.I have also heard the eastwood products are good along with a product called rust bullet, but for me I have first hand personal experience with por-15 and I know it works so I stick with it.the thing I don't like about the eastwood product is it's a rust converter which I used other products in the past (Rust-Mort) which is also a rust converter and never had a whole lotta luck with it.I to will top coat my sunline frame with rustoleum after the por-15.

Thanks. This helps. I'll have to do more reading now. Part of all this is like you have said. Try it, if it works them you know it is OK. Key is trying in on "other" small job not as big as a TT frame...

Both are good, key is which is best? Good question.

John

Thank you John and Rich,

I have my work cut out for me!

Trout season has already opened here in Missouri so we are anxious to get the TT ready for the season. Hoping the snow has gone for the year ?

Rich,

That's just plain beautiful! I wish my frame looked that good. I do have one question though: You said it applies best to bare metal, so does that mean you had to scrape all the undercoating off the frame first?

thank you for the compliment Jon,yes I did have to scrape all the undercoating off but it scrapes very easy with a razor blade scraper, the worst part for me was right after I got the truck I done the frame and undercarriage with rustoleum(wasn't thinking ahead about por-15) and it was not holding up so I had to scrape all that back off before applying the por-15 so I have scraped it twice already, the frame is real easy but the undercarriage that's a different story.

Rich,

Question? Once I scrape and sand frame or rusted areas , can I spray the por-15 ? or is it better applied with a brush? Had a painter tell me one time " brush once, spray twice" so I've brushed more than sprayed but with such a large area of the TT I am tempted to spray.

Thanks for all the info and wonderful pictures, you did a great job on that truck painting.

Jim

thank you jim for the compliment, whether you should brush or spray is personal prefference, spraying would definately look better, but how important is it on the frame or underneath when you don't see it any way, even being a body technician with all the tools and equiptment to spray, for something like a camper frame or my truck frame I brush,It's just to much extra work to tape everything up to spray and the por-15 really flows out nice and is hard to tell it's brushed unless you look real closely.I don't know if plan on doing the entire frame inside and out but when I done my sunline frame with rustoleum after the sanding and scraping was done it only took me about 2hrs. to paint the outside of the frame with a brush.that includes the tongue and rear bumper.
