No Battery power - help.

Hi,

I'm pretty new to camper maintenance and am trying to fix my 1980 Sunline camper.

My problem is that I installed two new 6 volt golf cart batteries (there was no battery installed when I got it) and I can get 12 volts up to the converter then nothing.

Last year it was run on shore power all year and there was no problem. This year we are camping totally off the grid with solar power so it is vital that I am able to utilize the batteries.

I have check all the fuses (three fuses) and they are good.

If it is due to a bad converter, is there a way that I can just eliminate it?

Thanks,
Caryl

Can you get the number from the converter? The answer is yes but it would help if I knew the converter number.

Yes, I will try. The camper is not at my house so it will have to be tomorrow or Thursday.

Thanks for helping.

Hello mainah,

I did find the manual for the converter and that allowed me to narrow the model down to either CS-815, CS-820, or CS-825 Sinc Power Converter.

Does that help?

There is only a diagram of the front of the converter that shows the AC & DC power input and the three fuses. Nothing of the interior.

Here is a photo that I found on the internet:

Here is how most of the older converters worked- they had two systems inside one to power the lights, pump, etc. the other to charge the battery. When it was plugged in the battery was disconnected via a relay and connected to the charge circuit while the other circuit provided power to the lights. The relays could fail or just stick together at the contacts so when you disconnected the power the battery would not reconnect and just sat there nicely charged. So if you knew the wiring colors it would be fairly easy to by pass the relay and disconnect the converter power lead. Most had fuses for the 12 volt stuff inside so it would be easier to leave it in place and defeat the charge system.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will get brave and open it up and see if I can figure out what is going on.

Thanks again,

Caryl
