newbie tank questions
hi, in my new 1983 1350 i was told by the PO that all the waste water went into 1 tank, the black tank. but i read in a manual that there is a sewage tank and a grey water tank, (10, 22 gallons respectively). can anyone clarify and let me know where these tanks are located?
also, how do i know when these tanks are full so they don't overflow?
thank you

To the best of my knowledge, yes, you should have both, 10 and 21 gallons. I suppose you could always get down on the ground and look up to verify.
While some trailers have tank indicators to tell you where the tanks are at, they weren't readily available in 1983 and never on the smaller trailers. The park model ones sometimes came with tank sensors. So you kinda just need to pay attention to the black tank level by looking down the toilet when it's open- if it looks like the water level is getting higher up there, then you should probably dump it. You'll know about your gray if it starts to back up into the shower floor.

If you just use the fresh water tank for all your needs you'll not fill either waste tank. The problem comes when you are hooked up to city water. Have a look under the camper and see if there are two valves I'm not positive but I think it's a requirement to have two tanks.

Hi Noralee......If all tank configurations are the same throughout the Sunline line, the grey tank should be emptied through the same sewer hose as the black tank. There should be two separate valve pulls near your sewer hose hookup. Its best to drain your black tank first, close your valve, then empty the grey. This way all the yucky stuff is cleared out of the hose by the grey water, which isn't as yucky! The city water that was mentioned is any water hookup where you attach your fresh water hose to the camper, giving you an endless supply of water as opposed to filling your water tank and limiting your supply to that amount.

My old class c only had a black tank but it was a 1973. Evidently back then they thought it ok to drain the gray water on the ground. Ten years later I think that had changed.

thanks all!
i'll have to check on the 2 separate valve pulls and look under the rig. i only recall seeing one...turns out the toilet has a leak in the back when flushed not sure if it can be patched yet or needs replacing.
the more i ask here, the more i see the PO's have almost no info about how their camper works. thank god for the manuals here! they will be so useful.

It depends on whether you have a fresh water or sewage water leak.
If it's sewage:
Basically, you have the toilet, then a gasket, then a nut, then a pipe, and then the black tank. The pipe part screws into threads on top of the black tank, and then the cap nut screws onto the pipe just like tank end. This pipe can split over time for various reasons. The nut is also screwed into the floor, but you'll need to unscrew the screws before you can unscrew it from the pipe.
It's very possible the gasket between the toilet and floor nut is bad too.
If it's fresh water:
It's probably one of the following:
- The main water supply line is loose (unlikely since it's just when it's flushed)
- The toilet water valve is cracked somewhere (which is replaceable without having to buy a new toilet).
