Need help with awning arm anchor repair

I have a 2006 Sunline Solaris T-2553. The awning arm anchor piece (closest to rear of camper) came out. It was held in place at the camper siding/frame with 2 lag screws it looks like. I lost both lag screws. I replaced them but I can’t get a tight fit. When awning arm is closed it works fine. But as soon as I try to open the awning the anchor piece falls out. Please help

Hi,

1. Do you mean that the 2 lag screws fall out as soon as you try and open the awning?

2. And with the 2 lag screws that will not tighten up tight against the lower bracket with a wrench, does the lag just spin trying to tighten? It won't bite in to tighten up?

3. Also, tell us the diameter of the lag screw bolts and how long they are? Like are they 1/4" diameter x 1" long, or 1/4" diameter 2 1/2" long etc. Need diameter and length.

Trying to make sure we understand what you are seeing before I explain what may cause this to happen. Pending the 3 answers, there are a few reason as to why. And what can be done to help correct the problem.

Hope this helps.

John

Thanks John. Attached are photos of the “good” side of the awning and the bad side, Don’t know the exact bolt dimensions because I am afraid to remove them from the good side as they may not go back in. The bad side has been replaced a couple times with increasingly larger bolts to no avail. I believe the originals are probably 1/4 x 2”. Are they supposed to go into the wood frame? If so I may have a problem!

Hi,

The pics really help. Thanks!!! Now we can see what you are up against.

I'm not sure what year and model camper you have, but by the siding color and style, I'm thinking it is in the 90's vintage at least.

The methods on how Sunline created the camper walls changed over time. Knowing the model year helps be able to tell some on the walls construction method.

But, regardless of the year, what I am seeing in your pics points to a rotted lower band board on the outside perimeter of the camper. Awning bolts that spin, is sort of a classic indication of water damage. The bottom of the wall ends up taking the blunt of any leaks above it.

Going longer bolts is going to have diminishing returns if the wood is rotted to the point the threads just strip out.

This is all fixable, if you have the time, use of common basic wood working tools and at least a beginners level of using them.

Before I start to type a lot on how to open up the camper to inspect and address the issue, this will bring up more questions on, where did the leak come from, do you fix the leak source, do you just the bottom rotted board and, do you want to take on fixing this yourself?

Hope this helps,

John
