How to remove silicone from your camper siding

Wanted to start this as a new, separate thread, but I CANNOT find how to do so. I know that I've not posted on the site for a long time, but perhaps this has to do with the changes to the site log-in arrangements. Or something.

Anyway. JohnB and Jim-Bev had mentioned the difficulties in removing silicone from the outer skin of Sunlines. Our trailer had two nifty little RV-shaped level indicators on it, one on the right front, the other on the driver's side front corner. The driver's side indicator, which the P.O. had applied using silicone, fell off. We wanted to reattach it (who doesn't like RV-shaped level indicators?), but knew that I first had to remove the old silicone before going on with new.

MUCH trial-and-error later, I found that straight rubbing alcohol, liberally applied with a rag, and then worked up with a nylon scrubby and much elbow grease, completely removes the silicone from the Krystal Kote, without harming same at all.

FWIW.

Hi Matthew,

I moved your reply to a new post. This is very good topic all on it's own. Thank you for posting this valuable information. This is the first time I recall someone finding a method on how to do this and not take all the Krystal Kote or paint off the camper.

Thanks

John

Thanks for the news. Alcohol and elbow grease. Will try that soon.

Were those levels attached to the trailer with some kind of foam pad or tape with adhesive on both sides or were they actually placed with a blob of silicone caulk?

I ask because if they were fastened to the trailer with the pad and adhesive, it's highly unlikely that the actual adhesive is silicone. It's normal for items like this to be mounted using a double sided foam tape or just plain double sided tape. Those adhesives are easily cleaned with either mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, or rubbing alcohol. I am not familiar with any common mounting tape that uses a silicone based adhesive. Perhaps others can chime in on that.

There are commercially available cleaners and solvents for silicone caulk. D-Solv-It, Dow Corning, DS-2025 and DS-1000, and Dynaloy's Dynasolv family of products.

Hi Steve,

Good question. I know just what you're referring to with regard to the foam-type adhesive, ditto for the double-sided tape. These little level indicators were attached with a single bead of silicone along their top edge. Whoever did it, did a nice job with it. Once I had cleaned off all the remnants of the old silicone, I went back on with a fresh bead. The indicator on the front of the trailer remains stuck fast in place.

I hadn't known about the silicone removers which you mentioned. I wish I had known about them when I was working my trade--would've saved me a lot of trouble when trying to remove the occasional silicone gasket adhesive.
