How to insert screw covers on corner trim?
I have a dilemma that I'm sure more than one of you has faced, and will no doubt get a laugh out of.
How do you get this vinyl trim insert started in the trim? I even trimmed back the edges on the starter piece to see if that would help, but no go. Soapy water? Oil?
Any suggestions as to how to get this vinyl screw cover in would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.
Frank

Gentle heat makes it very flexible. Maybe drop the roll in a bucket of hot as you can get water from the tap. If that doesn't soften it enough, then think about heating the water on the stove a bit, maybe 10-15 degrees above tap temp at first. Then just squeeze it laterally and insert into the channel. Do not stretch it while it is warm as it will shrink and leave you with a gap at one or both ends.
If the material is too wide, that should be pretty obvious almost immediately. It does come in several different widths IFIRC.

When I had to replace some of mine on one of my Sunlines, the best way I found was to basically try to "pinch" the molding and try to make the edges slide into the side of the track. I doubt that you will be able to just start it at the top or bottom and pull it thru the track. I think I was able to insert one side of the vinyl into the track and then kinda make the vinyl buckle a little while I slid, guided, talked nice to it so that it would slip into the other side of the track. If the vinyl just will not go into the side track, you might have to take a putty knife and try to open the track up a little bit so the vinyl can fit in.
Hopefully some of the guys will have some other methods.
Kitty

Good idea Steve, I'll give that a try. And I do believe it is the right width. I took a sample into the RV place and the parts guy knew right off what it was. I'm going back today or tomorrow for some of that stiff plastic channel insert for hiding window frame screws.
Kitty, I tried that some, but kept having it pop out the side I fitted in 1st. I'll go back at it.
I have another question. What is a good sealer to use to finish edges that have butyl tape as sealer? It just looks weird and I would like to run a bead of something (NOT silicone!) so the edges looked better. Does this make sense?
Got a meeting tonight, so no work on my little travel trailer tonight. Got a minor wiring issue figured out this a.m., which is good.
Thanks for the help folks!

Frank, There is a inside and outside to the coverstrip. This shows the coverstrip with the top at the top of the picture.
Here is the coverstrip folded for installation. Start at the end of the strip and insert the coverstrip as you go instead of trying to slide it in place. When you come to bends the metal may be compressed but hopefully the strip will go in.

Excellent! Thanks Jim. Busy tonight (meetings) and tomorrow night (37th anniversary dinner date), but I'll get back at it soon.

Frank, If the coverstrip gets stubborn you might try to press on it to force the edges into place.
Also, I would not stretch the strip since over time it will tend to shrink and if you have it stretched the strip will do funny things like pull out or the ends uncover screws.

Well Jim, it already has been stubborn! Those pics you posted are very helpful. No need to stretch it really, bought a whole roll, i.e., a LOT more than I need.
I'll keep y'all posted.

If you used butyl sealing tape, and I do recommend that in place of putty tape, the butyl is more sticky and dirt can some times stick worse to it then putty tape.
I myself have used Dicor "non leveling" chaulk. Have to make sure you get the non leveling. It can handle the road flex, you can heat it and get it off without destroying the camper.
Suggest you put down down painting masking tape over the camper siding so it does not spread there where you do not want it. Leave some siding exposed. Also using a wetted finger, (dip in water wet), and smoothing a few feet, wipe finger off, re-wet and go again, "If" you have to smooth it out. The wet finger trick I picked up from a fellow RV'er and was amazed how it works and does not stick to your finger.
Best is to start with a real fine tip cut off the tube and then do not smooth it al all. This is not the place for a wiggly hand....
Hope this helps
John

Yes John, I used butyl sealing tape. Do you mean non-leveling lap sealant like in the pic? They don't show that brand in my Boat n RV Warehouse catalog. When I go in I'll ask what they recommend, but not self-leveling right?
Thanks!
Frank

That is the correct brand but watch you get the right one.
Dicor Non-Sag Lap Sealant - Product - Camping World
The 501 series is "self leveling". This has been in a green and white tube lately
The 551 series is "no sag - non leveling" Mine is a an orangeish tube
Camping World was thje 1st place I went as I knew that had it. Other places sell it too like here. I never bought from these folks just a hit on the web and about 2X Camping World...
DICOR NON-LEVELING/NON-SAG LAP SEALANT 551LSW - WHITE
Shop and save....
John
PS Note you can get it in different colors. In my case I get white but they have other colors.

My basic problem may be finding that around Albany John. I don't think Boat n RV Warehouse carries it (it's not in their catalog), but I'll check today. If they don't have it, I'll try Albany RV. I'd rather not have to mail-order it if possible. Thanks for the help!

Frank,
Try Priority RV Parts at Alpin Haus in Amsterdam. (The Old Camping World) They seem to be well stocked. If all else fails try PPL on the internet. They have most everything and I've received parts from them in a few days.

I want to find something local (Boat n RV Warehouse or Albany RV) so I can get this baby wrapped up over the holiday weekend. I need time to get my classic boat ready as well before we head off for vacation July 12. I need to find this Dicor stuff locally, or it's just going to have to wait until I drive by Amsterdam on the way to Keuka Lake!
Thanks for the help.

A thought
In a time crunch, let the Dicor go until you have time to deal with it. The butyl sealing tape will work well all on it's own. The original only had putty tape.... Even good putty tape can handle 5 years if it was put on right on day 1.

Yeah, that's what I figure John. I want to get it done and out of the garage so I can park my truck inside! Of course, when it leaves the garage, it goes under cover in our pole barn anyways. It will have a 12 X 12 canopy over it camping too. thanks!

This turned out to be the help I needed. I was trying to install it the wrong side in! Thanks Jim!
Let's see, got my spare tire and holder in yesterday and today, and ordered that OEM bracket to hold our 20# propane tank up front. Hope to get the wiring cleaned up tonight, start installing scissor jacks, at least on the back so I can get inside and do siding and other stuff.

Shoulders are better Jim, thanks. Got all new trim in last night, both the screw covers you showed me about, and the hard vinyl ones that go around the door frame. Got started on wiring, but had to quit to get some other chores done. I'm going down now to see what I can get done before work!

Where did you find the hard vinyl trim? Been looking without luck locally.
