High Convertor Output

Hi Folks. I took my camper out of storage recently and have it plugged into shore power at my house to get it ready for use. When I went in today, My digital voltmeter that I installed by the entry was reading 16.5 volts. Well, that can't be right, so I got out my Fluke VOM and tested the battery voltage at the battery and at the convertor output and confirmed that it is indeed that high. I unplugged the shore power and checked the next day, and voltage had gone down to 12.6. I know my battery is good. It has a B-W 3230 converter. I seem to remember a hundred years ago, we used to be able to get parts for these and would have to replace the small charging circuit board to fix a not charging issue? I've never really had to deal with an overcharging issue. I did not check amp flow yet, but the voltage that high is concerning. Any Thoughts?

Hi Gary,

As you suspect, a real 16.5 volts left on long enough will start cooking the battery.

I have not been into one of these, but I found these two things.

This U tube while long and not totally accurate, he did show a pot on the charging board. Not sure if that is a charge voltage tweakable pot or not.

This link turned up a manual https://d163axztg8am2h.cloudfront.ne...549dd4fa19.pdf

That battery charger is not the greatest, any thoughts of an upgrade?

Let us know what you come up with.

Hope this helps

John

Thanks, John. I actually saw that video earlier which made me wonder if any parts were available. I have the paper manual that was in my original packet but its no help. I’m looking at upgrades, but i think i”ll pull it apart first to see if theres anything interesting. I like to take things apart.

16.5 on a low battery (sitting for awhile) is not uneasily high it should steadily drop to 13 volt some thing after awhile. I think the converter was solid state they are likely to do that and I think it also had a charge wizard plug in gadget.

It wouldn7bother me too much if I knew the battery was real low. But it wasn't. It was fully charged and sitting at 12.6 when I installed it. As for a charge wizard, well I'll see when I take it apart. I think there's a little circuit board in there, but I doubt that it's very sophisticated.
