Help with under camper repair
Hello All,
We just purchased an 05 T-2363 Solaris Lite.
It had a tire failure before we purchased it and behind the right rear wheel the black fabric type stuff has been ruined in a 8" area. I would like to put some insulation in there and patch it.
Question is what do I patch the black stuff with?? It needs to be water tight since it is behind the tires.

Hi Bee
Is this a tear, meaning you can fold it back up and all pieces are there just it is ripped?
Or is this an entire hole of missing material?
I have used a product called Flex Mend, looks like this.
That was 4" wide and made to seam over a splice. If this is what you need let me know I'll dig up where I bought it.
If you have an entire area in trouble, they do make this sticky backed woven water proof patch repair. It is 12", 18", 24" and even 36" wide. I found it at an RV dealer here locally trying to find the actual Darco water proof membrane. Seems most dealers have the repair patch but not the actual bulk material. Expect for 1 dealer I was sent to up in Michigan, General RV where that had an entire roll and they cut me off an 8 foot long piece.
Hope this helps
John

Wow that was fast JohnB!
The previous owner must have trimmed it because it is a hole. He showed me the hole and explained it to me (I love honest sellers!)
I will have to talk to a RV center to get one of those patches, I didn't know what to call the stuff!
I am making a laundry list of things I need to do come spring. I didn't want to forgot about this and be on wet roads spraying water up into the hole with the insulation holding it causing rotting floor!
Thanks,
Don

Hi Don,
It is common to call the black material under the camper, "under belly" waterproof material. The term Darco I used was a brand name. So if you talk to a dealer and ask for under belly repair tape XX wide they may know faster what you are referring too.
Flex Mend is also a brand name of underbelly repair tape.
One heads up, before you seal it up, make sure it is dried out good. This material does not breath. Once moisture gets in, it stays in.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.
John

Will do-
I will try to remember to take some pics as well. Problem is I usually have my mind on the repair that I forget to take pics until it is finished and never the before or during!
I will locate some underbelly tape and wait for spring to arrive.
Thanks for all the help John,
Don

I got the camera out and took a pic, I will wait till it is warm out before repairing. The right side of the photo is the rear of the passenger side wheel well.

Hi Don,
Yes for sure you want to seal that one up. Behind the wheels takes a good wet beating...
And yes, waiting until the warmer weather for putting the stick on patch is a good thing. If you are forced to do in in cool weather use a hair dryer to gently warm the material on the camper first. And leave the patch in the house until you are ready.
On mine they also stated you can gently warm it and rub once applied to make the bond permanent. Just do not get too carried away with the heat as it can melt.

This hole looks like a tire separation problem. If so, could the bent tank support be from the tire parts slapping it? Just seems that one problem could have caused both damages. Even if the frame "I" beams are bent it could have been from the strain on the support and not from the axle.
If both damages are from one tire separation there would be no need for concern about the axle to frame design.
I'm just saying.

The weather in Wisconsin is beautiful, so I decided to repair the hole!
I read somewhere on the net that this Nashua flashing tape works great with the underbelly fabric. So I went to Home Depot and picked up a roll.
I pulled out some gravel that made a home in the hole, then trimmed the frayed fabric. Pulled the staples to bend the siding out of the way.
Replaced the insulation
Install two pieces then a third attaching it to the wheel well tub.
I don't have a finish staple gun, so I used some roofing nails to reattach the siding. Should be good to go!

Hi Bee,
The repair looks good. Let us know how that tape holds up. That may be an easy to obtain option.
Thanks for sharing.
John
