Furnace no propane ????

Does the blower motor keep running if you, "completly" run out of propane ? I saw over at RV net where someone said some do and some don't. Just thought I'd ask.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Great question Sunline1!
Sorry, I don't know the answer. I, too, would be interested in knowing -- without finding out by running out of propane!

Clueless

I'm also kinda curious, if you do run completly out of propane, can you just put fresh tanks on and be okay or do you have to purgurge the line or something ?

Hope someone who knows will chime in.

Ok, I just went outside, flipped the battery's on, turn the propane on, started the furnace, let it run until the heat came out. Went back outside, shut the propane off, the furnace ran out of propane, The fan ran until all the heat was out of the furnace. I then turned on the 30 amp breaker, opened up the propane valve, went in the camper, made sure I had propane, started the furnace, let it run until I had heat. I then went back out and shut the propane off, the furnace ran out of propane, the fan ran again until the heat was all out of the furnace. So yes, the furnace and fan will run without propane about 4 minutes. If you have to switch tanks, just turn on your stove and lit a burner for a minute. It's easier for the furnace to light. Interesting. I haven't run completely out before, or at least in a long long time that I'd remember.

JohnB is on a distinguished road
If you run out of propane on an Atwood, maybe even on a Suburban too, when you run out of propane the flame will go out as there is no more gas. When the flame goes out and the unit is calling for heat, it should loose the flame sense saftey and shut down the gas valve. After a purge it will try and relight. After 3 try's and no light it gives up. At this point the blower should run to purge the chamber and then shut down on saftey.

The furnace did not know it ran out of gas, it knows there is no flame when they should be.

Once you turn on the gas, give it some time to get to the furnace, turn it on and it will try and fire off. It may take 2 or 3 firing try's before it lights. If it takes too many tries it will shut down on saftey.

The issue of the furnace running all the time may be confused with the battery voltage is getting low. When boondocking or a bad power converter when the DC voltage goes low enough the fan speed slows down. When the speed gets low enough the sail switch does not make and shuts the gas off to protect from overheating. In this case if the T stat is still calling for heat, the blower can run slow for a long time but never allow the unit to light. You wake up in the middle of the night to a cold blower running and no heat. The sail switch is a different saftey than the flame sense system. They both protect but have different reactions.

Hope this helps

John

Thanks all for your respones/inputs etc.

I use my camper, a good part of the year including "Winter", for an extra TV room. Ran underground tv cable to it, have a DVR in it as well.

Therefore I leave the furnace on, all night especially on colder nights etc. I was worried about the possibility of running completly out of propane during the middle of the night, having the blower motor running and no heat etc.

Now I can sleep soundly. Who would ever think this forum could make a senior citizen sleep more soundly. LOL

Thank again and Happy Holidays !!!!
