Full Renovation Journal of a vintage Sunline

Hey everyone, Just picked up our sunline a few days ago. We will keep a journal of our overhaul. The plan is to pretty much gut and rebuild the interior and tidy up the exterior. Posted below are the before photos, lots of during and after pics to come.

This is us digging the rig out of the snow where we purchased it.

So there is leaks in at least 5 spots so we are ripping the walls out.

The framing woods wasnt too rotten but is definitely weak so I added extra strength with some L brackets and strapping.

The Plan is to use tongue and groove cedar for the walls and ceiling. Here is the first truckload of cedar.

Interesting! Looks to be a 1983 T-1550. Shame it had the leaks. I like the cushion fabric color and pattern. First unit I have seen with it. Have seen it (I believe it or very similar) in truck slide in camper.

That cedar. What is the thickness? It will look neat, however may be a bit heavy.

Keep the pictures coming.

Welcome to SOC.

Hi Gypsyjoey

Welcome to Sunline Owners Club! And congrats on your camper.

Looks like you have a project going there. Some thing to think about, just passing along.

Your corner leak, do not know how far you have gone on the fix it process yet, however if you are planning on keeping the camper a while, now is the time to deal with that corner. Odds are high the water came in up top or through the corner itself because the putty tape dried out, created channel splits/cracks and let water in. Not that bad to fix, you take the outside corner off, take out all the old putty tape and line with fresh new butyl sealing tape. Check up at the roof line too. There may be an issue to deal with there too.

If you are thinking of doing the corners, I have some pics of of a similar corner that may help. This post will show a slide corner, same process as the camper corner, just straight http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...age-10695.html

The exposed wood that has water/rot stains, now is the time to treat that wood to stop the fungus from growing into decay or dry rot.

I have used this product to kill the fungus and treat the wood and add some strength back Wood preservation, rot repair, and restoration using epoxy resin on boats and homes.

Some use auto antifreeze to kill the fungus, it's cheap and is known to kill most anything. Just it will not stiffen up the wood if you have some decay

Heads on the Rot Dr. , for sure buy the right respirator and use it. The fumes will knock you out. After about 2 to 3 days they are all gone, but when fresh in a small space you have to us a respirator.

Hope this helps and good luck. Looking forward to seeing more of your project.

John

Awesome! thanks a lot for all the tips guys. I will definitely look into that wood treatment stuff. I am very new to this so any info is always appreciated.

And yeah I figured those cedar boards would add quite a bit of weight by the time I was done all the walls. They are a little less than 1 inch thick but surprisingly light, but not nearly as light as the paneling that was up before. We are most likely going to be taking out the furnace, fridge, and stove-top so that will lose some of the weight. Not much but some heheh. We will be keeping all the electrics and plumbing though.

I havent fixed any of the leaks yet but as soon as it warms up a bit Ill be patching the roof up real good. Its a blizzard today so Ill be doing more interior stuff this evening.

Welcome to the forum knttygrl. Good luck with your "new" 1550. Tomorrow looks like it will be a good day in RI (except for the AM rain).

Yup, we are picking it up tomorrow, it's a very sad looking thing but nothing that cleaning and paint won't fix ( fortunately) but the fridge isn't working so we have that to try and figure out any ideas on local help with fridge problems Gene?
Traci.

First, the RV type fridge needs 6 to 8 hours to cool and the freezer part will cool before the lower fridge section feels cool.

Often the older fridges will leak out the amonia. Look in the outside compartment behind the fridge and see if there is any yellowish residue. If there is then you need to replace the cooling unit.

When the fridge is working that round chimney thing going up to the roof vent will feel hot to the touch. If the amonia has leaked out, then it will overheat. Watch it closely during the first hour of two when trying it out.

If you know the model number od the fridge we can give you some more detailed help. There are lots of knowledgeable people here willing to help.

Beautiful day here in RI, upper 50s. Tomorrow (Sunday) will be a bit cooler.

Those are recovers, that's not original Sunline fabric, so indeed it's one of a kind.

Yeah I guess the previous owner had some new fabric put in before they sold it to us.

So I spent some of the day working on the sunline today. My intentions in the begining was to keep the bathroom and get rid of the fridge and furnace, mostly because the fridge was broke and the furnace was sketchy. But when I got to the hot water heater I realised it had been leaking for years, the flooor and a bit of the framing around it was rotted out.So out came the hot water heater too. I then got carried away and the bathroom came with it. I figured we will rarely use it and might as well free up the space. It was not properly winterized either as I noticed when I started cutting out the water lines, they where all solid ice. I wanted to keep as much of the layout original for the sake of keeping true to the vintage trailer. But this will be more practical for us. The outside will be brought right back to the way it was in 1983 though
Also with all these appliances tossed out, it will maake up for some of the weight I am gaining by adding the cedar planks inside

Progress, still have lots more to do in these corners but its a start. I am no carpenter either by the way. A little trim here and there will hide the rough stuff.

I rebuild the cabinet where the bathroom was. Here I plan to have shelving and cabinets. Possibly a very small fridge might be put in here also.

Looking good! Are they tongue and groove boards?

Your wood skills are good. The more you do the better you get. We all never stop learning.

I'm sure by now the smell of cedar is somewhat aromatic in the camper?

Keep up the good work

John
