I think the stripes were originally decals. We have a 1985 also, and I repainted the striping with spray paint. If you look under my profile I have pictures. It is time consuming but I think it came out nicely.
To shine it up, I used liquid car wax called "Ice." Someone left it laying around the garage so I tried it and it worked well. I used a couple coats on it. I used Magic Erasers and Clorox Clean Up to remove all the dirt and streaks from the siding before waxing or painting the stripes.
