Door - replacement

Howdy folks. I have been off this site a long time but been camping some with the kids and wife.

I need to replace the front door. The outside screws holding the cover to the wood is coming out due to the wood coming apart (wood rot). So - since it is a 1988 - figured it was time to replace it.

Can anyone tell me (I know one or more of you can) what kind of wood I should get to replace this door with? I will do the work myself by simply removing the outer shell and replacing the wood. Any other information I need to know? Anyone do this before AND have pictures to show?

Thanks in advance to the answers!

Hi 1998

Odds are good the original wood was just plain pine or maybe fur. Depending on how many years your looking for the door to last, you can use the pine, popular or most any other wood. Key is to seal out any water the best you can from getting to it. If you want the real added protection, pressure treated can work too. The difference is the cost.

See here, Frank_a rebuilt his Sun spot door. It's about 1/2 the way down the page

Good luck and if you can, post pics of the before, during and after. These pic posts really help the next guy coming behind you.

Hope this helps

John

Yours looks just like mine. I have an '87. I was going to replace the door also, but decided to rebuild it instead. Took about an hour. The whole door will come apart without having to destroy it.. Just replace the stupid staples with screws. It's framed in three sides with wood, and steel channel on the latch side. It is filled with styrofoam and the door surface (plastic) is glued to it. It should peel right off. I spent zilch, nada, nuthin' to rebuild my door.
