Domentic fridge??????

So my fridge does not work. previous owner said he thinks it leaked the amonia out. was going to replace but friend of mine who works in HVAC told me if no leak or stains (yellow) to remove fridge flip upside down for 24 hrs, then right side up for 24hrs-couple of times to mis the amonia and other liquids back together as they seperate from lack of use. anyways he is insitant that this will get it workind agian.
My question is- has anyone else tried this or know someone who has? Your/there findings/results.

Took it out yesterday! so I am already in the process. thanks in advance Mark,

I have heard the advice before, that's all I can offer on that.

Just in case, like me, you don't know it - it takes a good day for it to get cold from being off. I thought mine was done for, but another member suggested "leave it run and put a cup of water in the freezer, check on it to see if it freezes"

So, I did, and came back next day. Frozen solid. Saved me a ton of money.

I tried it once, but it didn't work. I'll admit I tried it almost just after flipping it back over and re-installing it. This happened right before I sold the coach, but the new owner said that it never did work for him and he ended up replacing the guts instead of rebuilding them.

I certainly think it's worth a shot to see if it'll work or not. All it costs is your time, and then you're familiar with removing it if need be!

I have seen a lot of posts on rv.net and several people have said it worked for them .... and several that it didn't ...

You can try a search on the Woodalls portal to rv.net. I think there were a few different "gyrations" to try that move the "junk" in the amonia to a safe place.

Hi, Here is a link to some refigerator info we used when diagnosing our refrigerator problem.
http://www.rverscorner.com/articles/refer.html
After ours quit, we found the yellow stains, so we knew we had to replace the cooling unit, or buy a new refrigerator. It was cheaper to replace the cooling unit. Ever since we did, the refig works great! Ronny

We also tried the flip and shake on our 25 year old refrigerator. This technique works sometimes but not for us. We ended up replacing it with a (bigger) electric fridge. We went electric because it cost less and we expected to only use the trailer for two months before reselling it.

Viking is an unknown quantity at this point
Six years ago our Norcold fridge quit working. There was a faint smell of ammonia, so it was obvious there was a leak.
The coach is small, and the fridge could not be removed from the coach through the door, so I went looking for a company that could repair the unit in situ.
The closest place to us was 210 miles away, in Shipshewana, IN.
The part that had rusted out was not available from Norcold as a service part, however, the shop there, operated by a Mennonite fellow and his son, fabricated the needed part right on the premises.
They put a cover over the dinette table, removed the fridge, and put it on the table to work on. I went and had lunch and visited the museum, and by the time I came back, they were testing the fridge to see if it worked on both propane and 110V AC.
The beauty of it was that they gave me a two year warranty, whereas a brand new unit would have had only a one year warranty. It was also a lot cheaper than a new unit.
I realize that Shipshewana may be a long drive for you, but there may be a shop offering the same kind of service closer by.

thanks to all for all the helpfull info. I removed the unit, tried the multi day flip method, and its a no-go. So I am going to replace with a electric unit. cheaper all the way around, and I am quite handy so I will build somthing nice around the new unit.
Mac,
