David and MaryAnn's slide problem fixed

We drove to Gettysburg, PA today and got Rebellious 78 ( David and MaryAnne's) slide working again I have yet to get any pics of the damaged slide mechanism, but will take some later tonight.

From what I can tell, there was just enough rust in the slide arm channels, to cause enough friction to jamb up the assembly. This was in addition to the fact, that one of the pins on the actuator was simply missing!

I took the slide motor, actuator and brackets, that came out of the T-299SR (Thanks Stan!) and it was a direct replacement. Once the "New" actuator rod and stop can were adjusted, it was test run time. The slide support rails made some awful noises on the way out, but the slide came out perfectly! We went and got some slide out dry lube and lubed it up pretty good.

The slide went out and back in several times and worked great each time!

David let me keep the old actuator and I plan on fixing it, to keep it as a backup. Pictures will be posted later tonight (Hopefully)

Here's the pics!

Here are the pictures, of what is left of the slide actuator..

First four pictures show how distorted the brackets are:

Here's a picture of the broken-off pin. I set it back in place, for the picture:

Here is a picture of how it broke:

In this picture, you can see how the tip of the pin protrudes into the hole of the actuator. The broken pieces are similar to a standard washer, with the pin attached to it.

This is the other side. From the rust, it appears that the pin has been gone for quite a while.

I believe it was a combination of the missing pin and the rust in the slide arm channels, that caused the carnage pictured above. Even though the Lippert manual states that no lubrication is necessary, I beg to differ.

Gary & Kitty, I am speechless at the way you have used our wrecked Sunny to rescue so many others.

...to say nothing of the love and support Peg & I have received from everyone here. Honestly, you guys have helped more than you may ever know, keeping me from going over the edge.

Don't think I mentioned this in the forum, but we got hit with a 35% insurance increase because of the wreck. I shopped everywhere online, and the quotes I was getting were even worse than our old insurance company. Then, by some stroke of luck, the agent who'd handled our policy retired and our file was handed over to someone else. This woman found that we were still being rated under a system that the company no longer uses with new customers. She quoted us a renewal premium that was actually less than we'd paid for the period immediately after the wreck, and with better coverage. And now that the "new" MH is here, it looks like it will cost us less than $300 a year to insure IT.

Thanks to all for helping me not to lose hope.

Stan

Stan,
I think we all are glad to see you here, on the mend, sharing your story with us and getting back into camping. Sometimes getting back on the horse is not easy and some people just can't do it. Best wishes for your future enjoyment of camping.

Gary,
If I recall correctly, those pictures look similar to something John posted here some time back when he had slide problems .... maybe ...

Gene, Peggy and I have traveled a bit since before we married in 1973. What brought us into the RV world was her retirement and the addition of dogs into our household. Since the dogs travel with us, the choice would have been to quit traveling altogether, which neither of us is willing to do.

We are off to a crawling start, but as long as we are moving I think we'll come out OK. Thanks in no small part to the people on this forum.

We like to give a special thanks to Gary and Kitty for coming up to Gettysburg on such notice to help us with our slide out. It was a great chance for me to learn more about the sunny and learn some great maintenance tips as well. It is hard to believe that those two pins are basiclly all that is holding the slide in and one of ours was missing. It is now working great and did not make any unusual noise when we put it in on Sunday morning.

We would also like to thank Stan for allowing these parts to be availible for to help people in need.

So, indirectly, you are thanking me for wrecking my 299...

I know what ya meant, but that just struck me funny.
