Converter CS4500 fan thermal "sensar"
Is there a thermal sensar on my CS 4500 converter, that can be cleaned or wiped off ??
Since I found out I can stop the fans from running by turning the conveter breaker off, Ive saved about a 100,000 miles on the fans.
Every time I turn the conveter on to run the air, or put on a DC light etc. the fans start running almost imediately.
I know I read on the forum that some of these conveters had poor fan speed/operation control.
But I was wondering if there is any kind of maintance/cleaning of a sensar etc, I could possible do to mimimize the fan operation in the future.
right now using the camper as an extra TV room, it's pretty easy I turn the converter on and off as necessary. At some point in the not too distant future I will be "camping", and turning the converter on and off won't be an option.
Any info appreciated.
thanks

I don't think there is any maintenance that can be done to fix these issues. Mine ran constantly - it was very annoying.
I think the only "fix" is either a new board or a new converter/charger. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Several of us have upgraded. JohnB has a great write up on the process here: http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f6...rade-8888.html .
I did a write up on mine here:

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply/info. Will review it all.
Is there a circuit board that I could replace to help me with the fan running ?

If you have the CX6000 then I believe the current model board CX6000XL is a much better system than the CX6000 (better fans, better sensors, multi stage charging, etc.). I believe it's a "plug and play upgrade." But according to John (~$225 at the time of his upgrade anyway) it was about the same money for a Power Dynamics Unit. I didn't even look into the CX6000XL upgrade, I just bought the Power Dynamics Unit PD9260 on eBay for $148 shipped w/ remote pendant. The PD units are made in the USA, as well. I've spent 30 days in the camper so far and never even heard the fans kick on in the unit once (almost starting to worry that they don't work). I've been very happy with the system.

thanks again, I'll review and digest this, and will do one thing or another.
Happy Camping

HI Sunline1
I feel your pain however there is not a sensor that I know of that is cleanable or adjustable in the older units fan circuit. This pic is of a 60 amp one but your vintage 45 is about the same.
Do you have a battery minder on the battery all this time? Reason for asking is if the convertor is turned off to save fan noise the battery is discharging even doing nothing. As soon as the battery is hooked up or much else of anything else in the camper is on that runs on 12 volts DC, that draw trips the sensor threshold on the fan circuit and turns the fans on as it see some type of DC load being use.
You can call American Enterprises and ask them if there is anything that can be done, but suspect it is the nature of the beast. Here is there web site with phone number RV Power Converters, Parts and Accessories from American
Be glad the fans have not made it to the “cement mixer” stage. The noise gets so obnoxious you get convinced real quick, this thing has to go…
Good luck
John

John
thanks for your info.
No I don't have a battery minder, but I also don't have the battery connected.
I charge it from time to time with my auto charger.
I turn off & on the Converter circuit breaker as necessary.
I find it troublesome that as soon as I turn it on and maybe turn on 1 light that that fans start running and even if I turn off the light they keep running.
I belive on a 75 degree day if I turn on the converter and don't turn on any lights etc, the fan starts running shorthly after.

Can't seam to edit earlier post.
Called the company, asked if there was anyway to minimize the fan operation.
Answer was No.
Was told I could switch the converter "off", and have the battery hooked up. Remove some DC fuses, like water heater/furnace etc. Things I'm not using now to minimize the battery drain by the circuit boards etc.
I have a battery cutoff, which is easy to turn on and off. Not sure it's worth it to save a few hours a day on the fans. Heck they were running continiously for a few months until I found out about shutting off the converter.
By the way was told on the phone how lucky I'am to have my converter still operating. I was told there were a lot of problems fan/hum/noise on these units which I"m sure some of you have heard about.
Oh well guess I'll see what happens.

Thanks for reporting back on the call to American. You confirmed my suspensions.
I never thought about it being hot in the camper. What little temp control they have can be triggered by it plain being hot in the camper.
Well you at least know your options. Some day the fans will drive you nuts when the bearings go out. You are now prepared for the fix. (aka = upgrade or replace)
