Caulk for Aluminum Roof

I am finally going to be getting the old camper ready for some camping. It has the metal roof and screws on all the seems. I am needing to clean and reseal the seems but not sure what to use. Do I use the Dicor or silicone? Or one of the many other products out there? If I use dicor should I use self leveling? I will be sealing around all the vents and seems. Not sure what way to go. Thanks

Randy

Hi Randy,

Neither.

Silicone is bad for just about any RV application, because as the trailer flexes going down the road, the seal will break.

Dicor (specifically the self leveling) is for rubber roofs, not aluminum.

I would recommend Dyco for your roof. Clean your seams, remove any loose parts of sealant, and brush this on a little liberally:

There are other brands as well, that are also a brush on style. No need to brush the whole roof, just coat all the seams and around roof accessories where there's sealant now.

Thanks for the info!! I see that Dyco makes a 20/20 seam seal and a shield and seal. What one should I use or does it not matter?

Randy
Dyco 20/20 seam seal. The shield and seal appears to be for coating stone work.

Pictures do show, and the seal job looks good! Hopefully mine will look half that good!

I see the pics are upside down but that's ok. I put up some scrap plywood and had the kids go on the roof and do what I could not reach from a ladder. They are a bit lighter than i am. I am glad i worked on the roof because found the roof vent above the bathroom was trash and i had to get a complete vent kit.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for reporting back on your repair and with pic's! The pics go long way in helping members.

As FYI, if you are taking pic's with your cell phone to upload to the forum, hold the phone straight up as normal when taking the pic. If you rotate the phone to take the pic , then they will upload sideways or in some cases upside down. The rotation is a command embedded in the pic and our forum software cannot change it so it loads rotated.

Cool pic at the campground. Amazing your old awing in in such great shape. The new ones, getting 10 years out of them can be a stretch sometimes.

Thanks

John

Horizontal phone pictures will upload normal too, but only if they are like that when you take them. If you rotate the picture manually on the phone in any case after it's been taken (in the edit function), that change won't upload here.

Jon,

What "brand" phone have you been able to get to work sideways?

On my I phone when I upload to my picture server they flip direction sometimes. I assume they would do that here too. BUT... in Flicker I can rotate any pic and then it seems to stick in that place if I post it elsewhere.

Granted this is not phone direct to the forum but the rotation issue off a cell phone can be problematic even on a photo server upload.

Janet did not state that some phones work and some didn't so I did not know that certain brands might. Point being, which brands work and which don't?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

iPhone 6S, uploaded direct to the forum via Safari and viewing the full site. So the page looks just like it does on the computer, just a lot smaller. I find it's easier and quicker for me to just get it done with the full site, rather than looking for where a feature is hidden in the mobile site or the app.

All the pictures I've uploaded of the '79 have been done this way. Upload direct to the album via phone, then type out and link the pictures to the thread from the computer. I rarely take portrait photos, so what's there is how they uploaded. Actually looking back, two that I did take portrait, uploaded turned 90 degrees and are horizontal. In both cases, orientation wasn't important so I didn't fix them.
