Bunk bed & mattress information

We just purchased an older Sunline TT mid 1980's that has the fold down bunk bed at each end. You can use it as storage (it has 2 doors) or sleep on it??. How do you keep from falling thru the doors? Should it have a board? What kind/type of mattress? We have no books/manuals or anything. Any help/information would be greatly appreciated. I think that they are meant for children 100 lbs or less. But kids wiggle.

Good morning and welcome to the group.

The bunk/cabinet area should (or originally did) have a thin sheet of plywood that you slid over the doors when using cabinet as a bunk, there was also originally cushions (about 2 inch thick) that you spread out to make the sleeping area. If these are missing, I guess you can replace them. And yes, the weight limit was 100 lbs.

Now, for how to keep kids from falling out, I'm not sure how that was handled back in the 80's, but now I believe you can purchase some things that creat a rail to prevent fall outs. Or if your handy, you might be able to creat your own. Maybe something like on that Radio Flyer wagon with the lift off wooden sides.

Back in the day (as our kids would say ) companies weren't so safety conscious. So we bought a bed rail that had 2 arms that you slipped under the mattress that kept the kids from falling out. That created lumps under the thin 2" mattress though, so it didn't get much use. We ended up putting a bunch of pillows on the floor in case someone fell out. Kitty's wagon sides idea sounds much better. Our bunks came with a piece of luan and a 2" thick foam, cloth covered mattress that folded accordian style to store on the bed when it was closed.

The mattress is folded up in the first pic, then later it's unfolded. You can see the luan panel in the first pic here, it does have a floral pattern on the top side:

And the rear bed:
