Bad Camco Antifreeze ?

Two weeks ago, I started to drain the antifreeze from my Windjammer. The cold water inlet valve on the hot water heater did not open. Ended up snapping the knob off. Being Pex, I sent it back to my dealer. They replaced the valve and also told me that the elbow on my front grey water drain was cracked. Had them replace that also. Continued to sanitize the water system I found the kitchen faucet was severely cracked and leaking badly. Also found the same elbow and valve on the rear grey tank was cracked.

When I winterize, I gravity drain the whole system including the filter canister, then blow air throughout. Using the water pump, I put the antifreeze through, flowing pink out each outlet for 30 seconds.

Last fall, I purchased Camco brand antifreeze from the local Ace Hardware. Has anyone else have problems with this brand ? All I can figure out is that it may have been a bad batch.

I figure about $500.00 in repairs. That is if I don't find anything else. Never had these problems with the Sunline. Guess I'll find out soon. We'll be at Cedar Point starting the 30th.

Sounds like you did everything right to winterize with blowing out the lines and then adding antifreeze with the water pump.

Camco makes two versions of antifreeze, one is propylene glycol and the slightly less expensive one is a "blend of Ethyl Alcohol, Glycol, Denaturants, Colorant and Water". I always use the propylene glycol one. I think I used Camco propylene glycol last fall (will have to check tomorrow). I just dewinterized last week and nothing leaked .... except the old washer on one section of the white hose!

Most of that stuff is a mix all ready so the freeze protection drops with any water added to it. It is made to be used full strength so any water left in a low spot will dilute it.

Checking the bottle,it is theEthyl Alcohol Glycol blend. Thinking of firing off a letter to Camco.

Ethyl Alcohol mix is good to -25 the Propylene Glycol -50 provided they have no dilution.

Went downstairs - we use Camco Arctic Ban Antifreeze for water supply systems - use full strength - no mixing required- protects to -50F says it contains Ethyl Alcohol, Glycol, Denaturants, Colorant and Water after all that it says pools - vacation homes - rv's - boats....

I checked today and I used the Camco 2 years ago, this past winter I used Prestone (RV, not the car stuff). Both were Propylene Glycol.

JohnB is on a distinguished road
This winter here was really bad in the subzero temps. If there was going to be a problem, this winter for sure would do it.

My John Deere 445 lawn tractor had a transmission leak it never had before. I had it up in the new barn and I checked it mid winter and there is a massive oil puddle under the transmission. It is a hydrostatic unit. Some seal way up high on the casing had to have seal shrink and the oil came out. In 23 years having it here this has never happened. And even now, still does not leak any more and the oil level is where it is suppose be. We had 2 sub zero cold snaps down to -20F about 2 weeks apart and that time period did it as I was up there before and after checking on things.

The camper was stored in the same barn and came out OK. I did the air blow method and not the antifreeze.

Bobo, don't know if you left the faucets open or not. I have found I leave them all open. If something is going to expand, it allows it a better chance to expand somewhere up or down the pipe rather then burst in place.

RV antifreeze really does not prevent freezing, it prevents heavy freezing expansion down to the temp it is rated for. Any small dilution changes the temp. When it hits zero F, it may be slushy in the bottle.

Hope you and get your rig fixed up soon to get out camping.

John

Just picked the unit up today. Another $300.00 to repace the kitchen faucet and connectors. The dealer wrote it up as freeze damage.

Yesterday, I fired off an email explaining the situation to Camco. No answer as of yet.

I've been using Peak RV antifreeze. Reading it seems to contain the same ingredients but I didn't compare the percentages. It's rated for -50. I air blow all lines first then pump in antifreeze turn off pump and open all faucet valves open.
I had a TT freeze up once that still had copper lines, now that was a bear to fix.

Well, Camco never responded. I did the rear grey water drain myself. Insurance does not cover freeze damage. Expensive lesson. Gonna leave the drains and taps all open this coming winter.
