Awning Support/Strut Bracket

Hi,

Someone must have really leaned hard on my awning strut as the bracket lag screws are now pulling out of the trailer. I am not sure how I want to repair this and was hoping to get some good advice from you all. I have thought about a plastic wood repair or making an oversize bracket to reattach the strut.....comments welcome!

Hi Wood Stock,

Is this the bracket up on the roof line or the one down at the base of the camper?

Did it strip out the wood, or do you have a wet wood issue? Different fixes for the differences.

If the wood is solid and not wet, maybe a longer lag screw that will bite into new fresh wood. And do that along with the wood rebuild plastic. I myself have not used the plastic wood repair much so cannot comment on which is the best. I have done the Gorilla glue trick with tooth picks etc on smaller cabinet door hinges, but never on a heavy pull joint like the awning. Maybe someone else has done that on a 1/4" lag bolt somewhere before.

Hope this helps and good luck

John

Hi John,

It is the bottom bracket that screws into the wood frame work. The lag screws are pulling out due to someone using the strut as a support on the way out of the trailer. My concern is that the amount of wood there is minimal at best and it is completely covered so I am taking a bit of a shot in the dark with the repair.

The best I can think of is to squirt wood glue it to the screw holes and drive in some hard wood golf tees. Let glue dry, cut of excess tee and reinsert lag screws.

You can also add some wood in smaller quantities such as push in a toothpick or two or three and break off flush. A golf tee might be too big. You might use a larger diameter screw and a longer one as a replacement also.

They make plastic expansion nuts up to at least 1/4 inch drill the hole out just big enough to force it in and re install the lag screw. If the wood is rotted nothing will hold.

Thanks to all that replied...this site has been tremendous for SunLine owners! I ended up putting a "sister" board on the inside of the frame and used two stainless steel bolts to bolt it all back together. But, while doing all of this my wife and I decided that we needed a little more room based on our last outting so we ended up trading in our beloved 2299 for a new 26.5 foot Jayco. So, after 7 years the sun has set for us...thanks to all that have helped me with any & all issues that I had to deal with over the years!

You'll be happy with your Jayco. We just moved from a 1999 23' Jayco to a 2001 27' Sunline. Jayco was allot better built unit.

Funny you should post this today. I had the same problem with mine and I repaired it today. I had to pull out a trash compartment, cut out lenoleum and remove a bunch of rotted wood in order to do it.

The lag screws were actually into the plywood in the floor, whoever installed it originally (it's the second awning) must have never known they were just drilling them into the side of the particle board.

Once I got under there and ripped out all the old rotted wood I found that the frame work (also wood) was just fine. Had they just gotten those lag screws in the right spot they never would have leaked and the floor wood could have been saved.

Oh well, live and learn. Anyway, I took a piece of 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 10" and slopped it up real good with liquid nails, hammered it down into the side of the wall against the metal went outside and raised the bracket 1/2" from the old holes and walah!

The awning is out now for the first time. It was awkward putting it out but it is now giving me a space to work under and out of the rain.
