awning support bracket

Hey everyone. I have a small problem, ( I hope ). The bracket at the bottom of my awning that bolts to the side of the trailer. The bolts are stripped and it's starting to pull away from the trailer. Any ideas on a fix ? Thanks Steve

Is the lag screw stripped or is the wood under the skin which the lag screw anchors into stripped out?

Can you take an ice pick or small screwdriver and determine if the wood is firm or if it is soft. If it's soft, it is probably gotten wet a number of times and some rot has set in.

If the wood under the skin is firm, then you may just need to go to a slightly larger diameter lag screw. Or, you might also want to inject something like gorilla glue or other wood repair epoxy into the hole, let it dry, and then re-drill a pilot hole so that you may even be able to use the same size lag screw.

If the wood is soft, it may require getting under the skin and replacing a section of the framing there.

I think it is very possible that the wood is soft. How difficult is it to get under the skin?

There are a number of threads in the Repairs & Maintenance section about this type of repair. You may want to look them over.

Hi 69Z

Here is a quick note for tonight. The good news is camper siding is installed from the top down. So the bottom gold piece was the last to go on. And in your case the 1st to come off.

Your camper looks like a smaller unit where the siding is stapled up from the bottom. Crawl under and look up. Odds are there is 1/2 a zillon staples (OK kidding but it feels like that when taking them out) holding it up to the bottom of the camper. They have to come out. Use fine screw driver to get under them and then yank with vise grips or pliers.

The fender, if that is what I'm seeing may also have to come off and the corner on the end of the camper. You can then see if they stapled it to the side of the camper under the corner. Odds are good they did. Once that siding is off all the wood will be exposed and you can see what is then next to do.

This is not your exact camper but shows the siding and how I took mine off and pout back on. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...age-10695.html

There are lots of pics there including fenders and corners and some what to do with rotted wood.

Hope this helps

John

PS I would take out the lag screw and ice pick probe 1st. If it comes out with sticky smelling wet yuk.... well you have some rot. The lag screw would be filled with it too
