Possible thoughts,
1. One of the springs inside the awning tube broke.
2. Something is binding on the awning tube bushing that rides over the awning tube support shaft and cannot turn. Heavy dirt etc. (may not be very likley, but not impossible)
3. One of the pop rivets sheared off and unwound the spring.
This thread may help show what is inside and what came loose with the spring.

I do express high caution if you unwind the spring to take the tube apart. Research it out well before hand and take precaution to ensure you can grip the awning shaft very, wear gloves and saftey glases.
Hope this helps and good luck
John
