It "depends"
If the wood is still sound, (means not rotted) And just stripped, then gluing in wood slivers can create something for the lag to bit into may help.
Sadly, lower camper awning arm area rot happens. Some times the lags where not sealed right when installed. Water wicks in and rot comes.
Question:
Did you take the lag out and was it rusted or was it still clean on the threads? If clean and no rust on the threads then the gluing in wood slivers may help, if it came out rusted threads, odds are favorable you have rotted wood.
This is the top arm, however the same sealing method would apply.
Take lags out
Notice lags are not rusted on the threads
Start putting back into good wood by pumping it full of Dicor sealent. The excess you can cross over.
I also coat the lag
Screwing it in
And in my case, on the roof line, I even Eternabond the roof line
Hope this helps
John
