Awning foot clamp mounting bolts

Just replaced awning fabric. Noticed the two bolts holding the foot clamp on one side are not tightening (probably bad wood). Is there a quick fix for this or do I have to go under the skin and replace the wood?

It "depends"

If the wood is still sound, (means not rotted) And just stripped, then gluing in wood slivers can create something for the lag to bit into may help.

Sadly, lower camper awning arm area rot happens. Some times the lags where not sealed right when installed. Water wicks in and rot comes.

Question:

Did you take the lag out and was it rusted or was it still clean on the threads? If clean and no rust on the threads then the gluing in wood slivers may help, if it came out rusted threads, odds are favorable you have rotted wood.

This is the top arm, however the same sealing method would apply.
Take lags out

Notice lags are not rusted on the threads

Start putting back into good wood by pumping it full of Dicor sealent. The excess you can cross over.

I also coat the lag

Screwing it in

And in my case, on the roof line, I even Eternabond the roof line

Hope this helps

John

Looks like wood rot. If I am thinking correctly, it looks like I can undo the staples underneath the edge of trailer and peel back the siding, undo membrane, and replace wood. Does that sound feasible?

Hi j52wf,

I replaced the wood at the bottom of the awning arm toward the front of the trailer. Not a hard fix but hard to know where to stop if you find a lot of rot.

Hi again j52wf. I did what you are proposing (remove the staples etc.) but I think I removed the section of siding to have better access.

Thanks Lawsco01.
Never dealt with siding before. Is removal of a section uncomplicated? Don't know if I should attempt this 2 days before leaving for long weekend camping.

Hi j52wf

See this post on taking siding off and putting it back on. Keep scrolling all the way down for taking it off and putting it back on.

http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...e-10695-4.html

That is my slide floor repair but it shows the siding coming off and going back on. The siding starts coming off from the bottom up, not like a house with it top down.

Once you take the zillion (maybe 2 zillion....) staples out of the bottom the gold siding should let loose unless there is a door way, corner or cargo hole in the siding you are taking off. Then you have to take that unit out to get the siding off.

Taking this on 2 days before camping. H'mm, from my experience I would say no unless you absolutely have too. You really will not know the extent of the rot until you open it up. May be easy or more involved.

The job is not hard if you have wood tools and handy with them. More time consuming as you are going slow the 1st time as you do not know what to expect.

Hope this helps and good luck

John
