Advice for Lens Removal

Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice in removing the lenses of my 68 series marker lights that are on a '97 2553. They are all "sealed". Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thank you!

Actually they're not sealed. The caulk is all from the outside to keep water from getting in behind the gasket. Peal the caulk off, take out the screws and pull the lens and bulb out. When you replace the lens tighten gently and alternating frequently with a hand screwdriver only. The factory used silicone around the lens and it still works for a replacement.

You can gently use a utility knife to score the caulk and the peel off the lens. Then once the lens is off, clean off the rest. A little heat from a heat gun on the Dicro helps you get right thru it. However your looks like silicone. Heat may or may not have the same effect.

I fully agree to reseal. I also ended up having to drill 2 small drain holes in the bottom of the lens to let the water out. If there is any fine line crack water will beat it's way in. So taking the lead from Steve Collins here on the forum I added the 2 holes as I had 2 of the top 3 in the back of the camper chucked solid with water... and a few of the amber ones.

See the 2 small holes here. Like about 3/32" dia. Now have no problems

The Bargmann 68's are an OK light fixture, but they have some problems.

First, they are prone to cracks on the colored lens. Over-tightening of the mounting screws or direct impact by just about anything will crack them. If they are full of water and freeze, that will do it, too. As JohnB mentioned, water gets into these things pretty easy so the drain holes take care of those issues.

Second, they require three holes for mounting - two screws and a larger hole for the lamp base. That's a recipe for water infiltration behind the skin. My Sunline came from the factory with a bead of caulk on the top of the fixture (but not on the sides or bottoms) on the front and rear only; just the ones up high near the roof. If I have to pull one of them off, I remove all the caulk, clean the surfaces, and the re-caulk when done.

Third, in addition to water, dirt gets into these things. Dirt acts like a sponge and holds water which ups the corrosion factor on the electric connections. So this is another good location for application of dielectric grease.

The good news is that they are fairly inexpensive - I have found them on the net for as little as $4 each. They can also be replaced with other clearance light fixtures which are readily available at auto/truck parts stores.

I am slowly replacing the 194 incandescent bulbs in mine with LED's.
