Converter upgrades are common. I did my 2004 camper.
I recommend if you can get a Progressive Dynamics brand with the charge wizard to fit in your setup. It gives you 3 stage charging and a desulfate mode.
These guys PD9200 Series RV Power Converters - Progressive Dynamics
They make many types and some with AC and DC fuse panels if needed. See their site
I bought mine from these folks. They sell many brands along with the Progressive Dynamics. BestConverter - Converters, Inverters, Electrical Supplies, Electronics
Hope this helps
John

I'm pretty sure you have the old style converter with the fuse panel inside the converter box.You can leave the fuse panel alone but you'll need to remove the 120V power to the old converter for two reasons one to power the new one the other because they will fight each other if both are running. Assuming you have the room you can put the new one side by side it will be a good bit smaller. You will need two #8 jumper wires to join the new converter to the old converter fuse panels + and -. There will be a ground wire on the frame of the old converter that will need to be placed on the new converter. It's not a hard job but it does require some understanding of wiring.

Thanks everyone.. looks like it will cost about $200 - $300 to replace it..I will probably just wire in a trickle charger to recharge the battery.

There are two systems in the old converter/charger one is used to charge the battery the other to light the lights and run everything 12 volts. The system was heavily weighted to lighting if the converter still lights the lights then yes you would have no problem with a small charger. The problem would be draw down of the battery during extended stays with a trickle charger it probably would not be able to keep up with demand if the converter side of the system did not work. I will say the modern charger systems are a great up grade for any older camper with a lot of benefits.
