87 Satellite heater issues?
This last weekend it got cold. 40 or less and the heater as expected ran a lot, but it seems to bring it just to temp, then kick off, then kick on a few moments later. I had the thermo set at 70, but it never indicated higher than 65 so its obviously un-calibrated.
If I wanted to replace the thermostat - can any unit be used? I have not taken one apart yet - but since its heat only, not cooling - can I just get a simple digital 7 day from home depot?
Also, the stove exhaust vent had mud daubers in it, Im wondering if perhaps the furnace outflow does as well and the blockage is causing the furnace to kick off early? Any tricks to getting inside one?

Yes, you can use just about anything for a thermostat. I got this one at Walmart, currently $18.88. We never had a night lower than 65 so the only time I used it was when I installed and tested it.

There are several threads in the Modifications section about using a Hunter digital thermostat, also available at Walmart. It is an easy install and the directions are very straight forward.

Hi Quaddriver
The furnace cycling on and off, do you mean it reaches setpoint, the heat stops but fan runs unit it cools down then fans and all stop. Then once stopped does it fire back up?
If so that type of cycling is usually driven by a poor T Stat. If you have the old original, they do not regulate well at all. I upgraded mine to the Hunter digital and now it regulates to within 1 degree. All for like $20 at Walmart. The only down side is it takes a battery. Just replace them once a year or like the smoke detector batteries.
If the cycling is fan runs all the time but heat stops and starts, well that is not the T stat. Describe more the on and off you are referring too. A blocked air port, in or out of the combustion chamber may cause the unit to over heat and shut the gas down on high limit. But the blower runs in this case and will forever until the T stat is satisfied.
Hope this helps
John

It does as you described at first - blower start, burner light, burn for a few moments, burner off, blower off, then 3-5 minutes later repeat.
I checked my battery voltage, I have 2 coach batteries and over the course of the night they went from full charge to 11.95 volts (using my DVOM) so that blower motor is a healthy bite (im sorta thinking if I drycamp during late spring very early fall, I might be able to go a week on full batteries!)

What you are describing points to the T stat. I'm assuming if you jack up the heat real high it will run constant trying to get there? That is yet another indicator the T stat just will not stay stable when it reaches setpoint. It hunts constantly.
The heat anticaptor circuit on the old analog T stats was not very repeatable.
And yes, the fan motor is usually the highest drawing DC appliance. It going on and off like that can drain the batteries fast.
If the unit runs constant and fine getting close to setpoint, like a 10 degree jump but then oscillates around setpoint, get the Hunter simple electronic one. It is just a set of dry contact relay outputs in side.
Good luck and hope this helps.
John
PS a week on full batteries, well it depends on what DC power you use. With your furnace doing what it is now, draining from 12.6 to 12.7 volts (full charge) to 11.95 in one night is a healthy drop. You may not make it thru the 2nd night at that rate. Gotta get that under control.

We dry camp very "carefully" and during the summer we can get 4 - 5 days out of the two batteries (without running the genny)....
Granted we still use the original light bulps (have not gone the LED route YET) and watch what we use and when....so 1 week might be a stretch IMO....

thats waht I meant by late spring or very early fall - with no heater running, and on LEDs, only the bath and Kitchen fan will be my draws...except for the water pump. If I make good on my threat to install the sunforce 15W solar panel....
