If your AC unit has not been run in many, many years, the fan "might" be froze up from corrosion. During times of extreme cold, then it gets hot, condensation forms on the armature and corrodes to the stator of the motor.
If you want to see if this fan lock up has occurred, gently remove the cover on the roof unit and spin the fan by hand. If it spins, you are ahead of the game and odds are better it might run. If it is froze up, well you either have to attempt to fix the motor or buy a new motor. It might be better to see if the fan spins before buying the generator. It may change your mind.
Be careful on removing the cover. Bee's nests are common and the cover can be extremely brittle from sun damage. You may end up needing a new cover and be in for sticker shock at what a new cover costs...
