10 x 1-1/2 Dexter brakes

I have one of the goose egg 1988 2800 lb twin axle setups. Does / has anyone replaced the magnet recently? I can find some stuff online but it is a little conflicting with the possibility of having to replace the actuating arm with the magnet. it looks like they took the round magnet and started using it on 7-1/2 in brake setups right around the same time the trailer was made . I guess it would be my luck that wheel #4 in the project was toast. All fire and brimstone inside the drum

The only ones I have been able to find recently have been OEM Dexter and they are like $50 each.

If the brake plate bolts onto the axle, an entire brake plate assembly is $68 plus freight. Check the center pilot hole diameter before ordering.

See here. I buy a lot of Dexter parts from them and have had good success with the transaction.

They also have the right hand assy, https://www.easternmarine.com/electr...and-k23-473-00

Hope this helps

John

Many of the smaller campers had welded backing plates so you may be stuck with a rebuild. The parts are out there but can be difficult to find.

Yes its a weld on and after calling 20+ rv places in Michigan and Indiana asking each service person who they think might have it, i got nowhere. I called dexter and talked with a wonderful older gal and when she said "I have some old notes because nobody else remembers this stuff but me" a smile grew on my frustrated face. I got a number and another amazing person at said number is verifying that they have the only 2 units on this planet in their old stock but it was probably going to be tomorrow before she could call me back. Fingers double crossed for tomorrow!

Yes, as we have found many of the older campers had weld on brake plates.

But... a new piece of the puzzle has come to light recently. Sunline Fan's 79 camper he is rebuilding has a bolt on brake plate. And I think he bought a new Dexter brake plate complete to fit it. Do not know what years were bolt on vs weld on or the reasoning behind the weld on. That mystery is still in the making.

I did buy new brake plates, and they fit the axle perfectly!

Yeah after 40 years who is to say obvisually all axles were not the same even though they are rated the same. Welded plates cost savings over the bolt ons how many different axles fit certain applications? A single axle the same as a two axle trailer X2? If only they could talk.
