I'd go 8'. The remainder of the rail acts as a drip rail. You don't want it hanging over the end because the material would flap and tear. The end of the awning is nothing more than awning fabric wrapped around a plastic cord, so it's easy to tear. The end is not heavy duty aluminum or anything.
Sorry I couldn't confirm the stock length for you, I never measured mine... 8' sounds about right though. Mine mounted just behind the rear storage door (maybe back 4") and just in front of the main entry door (in front maybe by 6"). That was where the feet mounted at the bottom of the trailer, so the arms extend longer than the fabric itself. Up on top, the rear upper rail is mounted inside the end of the rail by maybe 2", and the front is mounted inside of the front end of the rail by 4".
