Sorry to be late to this discussion...

I was interested to see the comments about the Sunline/Airstream numbers as I own an airstream and have a set... Those numbers are issued by a dues based membership club called the WBCCI (Wally Byam Caravan club international) and are randomly assigned. Not all Airstreams have them and the dues are steep and club membership is actually quite small (about 6,000). There is a second numbering system however that is free and becoming more commonly used. It's based on membership number of the AIRforums.com which is very much like SunlineClub. There are almost 50,000 members now.

We could do the same here.

When you join this forum, you are assigned a membership number. These are sequential and so those who joined a long time ago have lower numbers. While it's possible to change your username here - the member number remains the same and there is no way to change it.

To find your current number, just mouse over your username in your avatar. Look down at the bottom of the page in the address bar to locate your number. I'll see about adding the member numbers to the membership list

member number.jpg

We could add a feature to the membership list to display these numbers and sort the list by number. This would make it easy to find people. We might even be able to add that member number to your avatar block (over to the left of posts) so it displays.

If you want to do stickers, I'd recommend a two part system:

1. A standard standard logo or plate with the sunline club logo or info (no numbers) and some blank space for numbers.

2. Vinyl numbers that could be added. If you have vinyl (stick on) numbers made you only have to make 0 - 9 and then members can choose the digits they need and stick them on themselves.

Members could mount the plate were they like; in a window, on the side of rig, or even on a stake in the lawn at a campground.

One of the things I always liked about the WBCCI numbers was that they were large (at least 8" tall I am guessing) and readable at a fair distance. That made it easy to get the whole number when passing on the highway. I am certain that it also helps when traveling in a caravan to spot who is who.

I really like the large numbers. If I see you coming at me in the opposite lane on the interstate, the larger numbers make it easy to figure out who you are.

My preference would be similar size numbers in green or blue (WBCCI is red) and similar placement: smack dab under the triple DOT lights on front and rear of the trailer with either a logo or a simple sunlineclub.com underneath. If we could agree on color, font and size for the lettering, it would be very easy to get them made up.

Janet,
Somehow that number at the bottom of the page is incorrect. Kitty and I each know what our # was when we joined, but the number on the bottom is +3. The correct number can be found by checking the member list and sorting by join date.

Steve,
8" numbers would be easier to read and may look ok on Airstreams since they don't have decals like Sunlines. With the graphics on the rockguard and 8" numbers, I think it may look crowded.

HUM, Well like Clueless Camper said, mousing over my user name shows me as #17, BUT when I went thru the membership list for August of 2006 I am member # 14, so where is the discrepancy?

Inquiring minds sometimes end up with more questions than they start with !!!!

Exclamation

Janet.....

Please add my name to Clueless and Kanyon Kitty's curious # commenter list. I had done a manual count on all listed members prior to my 01/01/07 Join date and had come up with 129.....a difference of 20 from the 149 mouse-over number. Altho I won't swear my # is ABSOLUTELY correct....I doubt that I was off 20.

I believe the 3 user account discrepancy is due to a couple of administrative "hidden" accounts that are created when the board is created

This is 8" Arial font in green on the front of my trailer. I think the 8" may be just a bit large, but 6" would work really well.

The back of the TT is another matter, and there I am inclined to agree with others that something smaller, maybe 3" or so off to one side or another would be much better.

The front of the TT is what you'd see passing each other on roads anyway so the larger font there would work better, IMHO.

Yes - it is and it may be possible (maybe) to change that. A year ago, the forum was moved to another software platform and the admin accounts were added before the move - setting the members numbers off by 3.

Let me do some head scratching on this and see what can be done.

Frank - It's important to note that banned accounts (spammers) don't display on the member list. It's also possible that some accounts were merged on request from members who had more than one set up and the duplicates don't display either.

Janet.....

Thanks for the prompt explanation. At least now I won't have to blame the difference in count on my creeping geezerdom!

Thank you Janet for your efforts. I see the numbers don't exactely follow the count on the pages as discussed earlier. I'm 258 not 255 as I thought. The advantage of vinyl numbers is that they peal off easily. No problem.

I would love to carry a list so when I see someone on the road, Sunline spotting would take on a whole new approach in the forums. Seeing a member in a campsite would be like meeting an old friend you haven't met yet.

A few weeks ago I bought letter size paper on Amazon that's made for ink jets to make vinyl bumper stickers. I've had one on the car for a month now and so far it still looks pretty good. It runs about $2.00 / sheet.

That's what I used to print the Logo for the display. I thought converting to B&W might look better for this use as displayed earlier in this thread.

Hello Everyone,

I post so randomly, that when I do come back to catch up on the Sunline drumbeat it takes me a while to get current.

I agree the idea of an identity tag of some sort is interesting, and could prove useful for those inclined to watch for other Sunny owners while on the road or in camp.

Oddly enough I have never run into another member...ever! I carry a stash of those member cards we can print out and give them out to Sunline folk whenever I meet one, so far virtually none of them knew of SOC!

But regardless, the matter of how to configure and what to include on a proposed identity tag is obviously one with a multitude of opinion chasing it.

I joined a couple days after Kitty back when men were men and Sunline was still in business. We certainly have grown, although in searching the membership listing, it is full of people who remain mute and obviously joined on a whim never to utter a word about anything.

I don't generally put decals/tags on windows, I’ve never put a bumper sticker on a vehicle, I even stay away from t-shirts with advertising on them. It's just me, and the idea of tagging my sunny doesn't warm me up much either because at the very least it's one more thing to maintain for no certain benefit based upon my earlier comment about never meeting another SOC member anyway.

But if we were to go to such a system, I could bend my personal tastes a little and add an ID as long as it isn't totally overboard size wise. I think a simple SOC-015 in 4” BOLD Arial would work for me.

Those are my thoughts on the matter for what there worth.

Bob

I could work with that very well! Simple, straight-forward, accommodates owners and alumni alike, and is not too big or too small.

I'd suggest placing it under the right side marker light as you look at the trailer on the front and rear so we'd all be looking in the same place for the SOC number.

And, taking Paul's suggestion in consideration, they could be made up at home using the vinyl sheets or ordered from a sign shop or internet source - there are dozens of them.

After some research - it looks like the 3 digit discrepancy in the member numbers can't be undone. These numbers are a fundamental part of the data base and so it looks like the 3 digit promotion will be permanent.

We have added a list of member numbers to the membership list and a small display over in the avatar block to facilitate finding numbers.

I think the only open issue thanks to many great suggestions and a fine effort by Janet is:

Do we use:

XXXX
or
SOC-XXXX
or
SUN-XXXX
or
users choice. A Sunline with a number would be recognized by members and any would provoke questions in which case we would plug the club.

Thumbs up

Folks.....

I'll vote for Janet's "SUN #XXXX" version....on a voluntary basis. But these proposals have only been discussed and/or read by a fraction of the SOC membership. Would it be a good idea to have a month-long announcement and poll to give the overall SOC community a chance to understand, consider and react/participate?
