So somebody repainted the camper to try and say it was newer?

You might try using a chemical paint stripper sold in the paint stores or lumber yards. It will dissolve the paint.

If your VIN tag is plastic, do not use the chemical stripper it can melt it. If it is metal, if should work. I myself have not tried this on a VIN tag but have on many other metal parts and it works well on them.

Hope this helps and welcome to the club.

John

Hmm, not sure how I never saw this thread in the first place. It is indeed a 1983, repainted with 2000/2001 decals applied. Definitely nicely done to look like a new trailer at that time.

For cleaning VIN tags, I've used a wire brush and some steel wool too. The tags are aluminum and brushing lightly with the wire brush won't really hurt it. A brass toothbrush size one works well, if you prefer to not go the stripper route.

we had same problem, bought ours in KY, we are in Ohio, had to find vin to have inspected and cleared for Ohio title. Searched all the usual places with no luck, even scraped paint off the hitch. Finally found a yellowed scrap of form glued to toilet room wall, lucky it had unit # on it, ours is 440479. most had been torn or scraped..maybe this will help.

Yeah, the quality control certification was usually glued to a wall, but since it was just paper, it became fragile and sometimes didn't last. I think the one in mine was inside the cabinet over the long bench, just inside the door, but it's completely missing. I only see a little residue of glue that hints that it was there.

Your serial number is pretty hard to see. I attached a picture of mine, after I went over the numbers with a silver paint marker to make them easier to see. I'll clean it up more, but this shows how shallow the stampings are. The 4 on mine is so shallow, it can barely be seen without the coloring.
