Trade in or refill propane tanks

Which do you find less expensive?

We have 30lb cylinders and we have them refilled. I go to my local family run hardware store that "weighs" the tank, so I know for sure how much propane I am paying for.

I have heard "stories" about the trade in. If you have good tanks, I think you'd be better off just having them refilled. One thing I think about with the trade in deal is if you only have "One" tank and it's partially full, and your going on a camping trip, will it "last" thru your entire trip. With my own tanks, I can just take the one or both that are partially full and have them filled. And I personally like watching the scale while they refill my tanks.

We refill. We've also found that the price of refilling can vary significantly. We use a family owned equipment rental company, and it's about 1/3 cheaper than when we used UHaul. And they're MUCH friendlier!

When I first read the heading to the post, I thought you meant, either trade in the "Sunline", or get the propane re-filled.

I didn't think propane was that expensive yet.

Another one for the refill. My tanks are good and I'm keeping them. Fortunately we have a nursery right down the road that sells by the lb. So I can top the tank off or a total refill.

I refill also. My tanks are in great shape and I like to keep them that way. I don't know of too many places that would even exchange a 30# though. I've exchanged a couple 20# tanks in the past that were rusty and not in great shape.

Refill! Of course, with these bad boys, trading really isn't an option...

I traded mine in because one was an old non refillable tank and WallMart did not seem to know the difference and the other one was very rusty but I probably will have them refilled now that they are nice looking tanks. There is a campground 1 mile from my house and they are very reasonable on refills and I think I run a better risk of actually getting them full.

Refill absolutely.

If I ever find a place that does trades on 30# tanks I will make a mental note to use them if one of the tanks starts to look rough though....

30# tanks even empty are fair heavy there is a weight stamped on the tank it is the tare weight that is what the empty tank weights they vary by manufacture. Generally filling stations fill any thing over 20# by the gallon (some do weight them) but the pumps deliver liquid gallon measurements. Unless a tank is built to be used horizontal it would be assumed that they would be vertical tanks and should not be used on their sides as it would be possible to introduce liquid propane into the lines not a good thing.

Thank you, just couldn't figure how it should weigh so much empty. Wasn't normal.

What we have found exchange tanks usually contain 17# they say it's because of overfill protection but the bottom line they are 20# tanks and that is what they will hold before the overfill valve shuts them off. It is just a corporate way of stiffing you for 3/4 gallon of propane. I guess I would not mind if they just charged for transport but to sell you some thing you expected to be 20# of propane and only get 17 just is not right. Go to a reputable propane filler and if your tanks are getting rusty or old trade them in and fill the new ones next time else where.

We own a metal shop, the tank are in quite good condition, probably due to nice dual tank compartment on tongue of trailer. It just seems like such a difference in weight on the 2 tanks both empty, wondering if I can get them refilled, where I get my oxy , acetylene, argon refilled , I think the do lp too. I'm calling them now thank you. What part of Maine are you from, used to live in Winter Harbor my self in 70s

So what should I pay at today's rate for a 30 lb tank. I called one local place and they said a flat $30 and U-Haul down the street says $4.49 a gallon? The flat rate place take the bottle away and brings it back full, so you really don't know what they put in it.
