Rubber Sunshine roofs

Some one else posted "As some others have found, Sunshine did not use the best underlayment on their roofs in the later years. It is essentially a one-piece heavy cardboard pane l" / Does anyone know if earlier year sunshines had stronger better roofs? So am I correct that I could not put roof racks and haul a canoe on top of a 1987 1550 Saturn Sunshine? If you can't walk on the roofs how can you clean or repair them. Or put Eternabond on all the seams including vents and air conditioner. This has me very worried.

I'm not sure if the aluminum roofs had bud board beneath them or not, but I don't think so.

Rather than Eternabonding the seams on an aluminum roof, I'd just give it a really good new coating of mobile home roof sealer.

You can definitely walk on any Sunline roof, you just need to know where to step so you step just on the rafters, or else put a piece of plywood up there. An aluminum roofed trailer is easy because you can see where the screws hold each panel to the rafters and where they're sealed, so you just step there.

Does anyone know what the rafter on say a T-1550 is rated for. Then too, condition of any given rafter comes into play. I say this as I'm a rather light person, whereas some people weight 2x myself.

Did the T-1550 get a thicker roof (thus deeper rafter) over the years or stay the same?

No idea on either.

A rafter is essentially a modified 2x3, standing on end. So if that could hold your weight, then you'll be fine. That said, most people shouldn't have a problem getting up there.

Thanks Jon.
If I knew what the wood was for sure, I could work out the load rating. I guess I could get a approximation by going between Douglas Fir and Spruce/Hem/Pine.

Been years since I did construction and architectural loads. All my reference material is bury away. Online search or let JohnB or the engineer (sorry can't be sure whom is was that had loads down pat) reply.

Not sure if mine has pine or fir, but a2x3 layed flat ! And some 1x2
The alum roof is just layed on top no backer wood.
Mine has roof air, 100# , and like your floor plan, the bath wall is centered and helps support the roof in that area. I alwase walk on some plywood, spaning 3 spurs.
All that said, a rack could be mounted into the spurs, sealed. But the wind force will be higher than weight. You have seen a car with a heavier bed on the roof tring to be held down with twine and two hands! Lol

Can anyone comment about the difference between the results of sealing the roof of a Sunny TT with Eternabond, versus Liquid Roof? I am going to put a coat of something on my Saturn, it lived in Sunny Arizona, and now lives in Colorado so the roof has some dried up areas that need help. Not leaking, but looking to maintain.

Should be aluminum. It should be kinda textured, and will have a crimp pattern to it. It will also have sealant across the trailer where the panels are sealed together. A rubber roof would just be a big smooth surface with the seam sealer around the edges and components.

thanks Jon, Great description of my roof, it's kinda textured, and it had sealant across the trailer where the panels are sealed together. Is there anything special I need to do to seal the seams, and apply the coating? Mobile home roof sealer? It may be $$$ in my area (southern colorado with only one major store, a local one, for RV schtuff.

Hi Kit,

A quart of this is what I recommend:

RV Roof Sealant for Sale - PPL Motor Homes

Basically before you even open the can, make sure the roof is clean. Then, go around with a putty knife or something and look for any loose sealant. Scrape that off with the putty knife so that the new stuff can adhere to a good surface. Spot clean under those areas if needed. Now is an excellent time to replace anything on the roof that needs to be, such as cracked/broken stink/vent pipe caps, rusted roof vent frames, etc.

Then, working from the center of the roof out, re-coat all the seams with new stuff, of course making sure to go a little over the edge of the old stuff to ensure a good seal. With the main part of the roof being aluminum, there's no need to coat the entire roof, just the seams. Make sure to do all panel joints, seams around the roof components (TV antenna, roof vents, holding tank vent pipe caps, etc.) and the perimeter seams around the trailer. Might not be a bad idea to mask off the edge of the trailer when working there because this stuff is kinda messy, so that should make for easier clean up.

I'd recommend a disposable paint brush (or 2, or 3), because this stuff is quite sticky and thick with no easy way to wash it out.

All in all, not a hard job, just make sure to plan out to do it when it's warm enough and dry for a period long enough for the stuff to dry.

Well I finally am getting ready for the roof sealant. Today, I ran new screw cover all around the camper and while up on the ladder I can see the hot summer has really dried out the joints around the vents, ac, and antenna. I'm headin out for three weeks of camp/travel so I may need to wait till Oct 1. No leaks, but in need, especially where the screw cover meets the roof.
