Propane tanks switch automatically?
We have an 07 T2499 and Leo & I had a discussion about the propane tanks switching. I thought when one emptied it would automatically switch to the 2nd or full tank (provided both are "on"). Leo seems to think that both tanks would drain "equally". Do the Sunlines have an automatic switch or do you have to switch manually when one empties????

Hi Kathy,
I run off of one tank and switch over between them when the one gets empty. Therefore, one tank always will go empty and you have a backup.

While I'm not sure what your LP hook ups look like having a much newer model camper, my 92 has a selector switch to chose which tank will be used to push gas to appliances. Mine is on the backside of the set up if you're facing the front of the camper.
The highlighted metal dial has a selector arrow that swings 180 degrees to the left or right to designate the tank.
Take care,
Jason

Mine has a switch that will change to the "other" tank when the "primary" tank is empty. I slide a switch to the primary tank. That being said I usually do not open both tanks. I like to know when one goes empty. I usually find out when I try to boil my water for coffee in the morning.

Mmm, that is good to know. I'm going out for the first time next weekend and I thought they would switch automatically. I can see now, thinking about it, that you would want to switch manually because then you know that it's time to fll the one tank that's empty.

I believe it depends on the type of propane bottle pressure regulator set-up that that you have. I am familiar with two types: one that switches from one tank to the other automatically and the other type that does not.
Automatic switch-over: you can tell if you have one of these by looking at the pressure regulator and seeing a black lever on the mechanism either pointing to one tank or the other. We always open both tanks. The lever is pointing to the tank that is being consumed at that time. Ours also has a see through window just above the lever which will either have a green or red colour indicator in it letting you know whether the propane tank that the black lever is pointing towards still contains propane (green) or it is empty (red). You must have the tanks open for you to see this indicator correctly. When the tank that is being used is empty, the mechanism will automatically switch over to the other tank. You will only know this when you look at the see through window and the indicator turns red. When this happens, flip the black lever (180 degrees) so that it points at the other tank so that you know that this particular tank is now in use. The indicator should then change to green. Close off the empty tank, remove tank and have it refilled, reconnect, open valve again and the cycle starts all over again until the window turns red again and then you just repeat the procedure.
Non-automatic type: This is the plain and simple one. This regulator has neither the black lever nor the indicator window (does not have the features as described above). I just turn on one tank at a time until it runs out.

Your regulator most likely looks like this. Both of my 2004’s have it and most new ones I have seen. So your 2007 should this it as well. A Marshal Brass. Model 254
Here is mine on my 04, T2499
This 2 stage, auto switch over regulator works just like Travelinsunline described.
On mine, I do and I don’t use the auto switch over. During winter OR when I rely on the propane for the fridge or furnace, I open both tanks and do the auto switch over so I do not run out in the middle of the night. I keep a close eye daily on the LP level when ever I use it so I know if one switched over night.
If I am only using the stove then is does not matter so much if I run out on one tank and have to flip over. But even then if I have a tank with less then 1/4 full I still most times use the switch over feature. If it is more then 1/4, then I just only open 1 tank as I will never use more then that. On just the stove top, a LP tank goes a real long time. The furnace is what eats LP faster.
The auto change over works well for us, but as said, I also keep a close on tank level all the time.
Hope this helps
John

We bought our unit new and it did not come with an automatic switch over regulator. I bought one for about $35.00 from the dealer before I left. It works very well but you have to keep an eye on it. I always turn both bottles on but it draws from just the one. When the one empties it switches over. Once I notice that it switched, the next chance I get I remove the empty and have it refilled. When the second bottle empties, it switches back to the first. Keep an eye on it and you'll never get cut short.
