Newby Awning Question

I'm a brand new Sunline owner and new to campers. We recently bought a 2000 L-25R Advancer from a friend who had owned it for a short time. When he bought it it didn't have an awning so he had a used Sunchaser awning installed, which he never had a chance to use. When we set the camper up this week we discovered that when we fully extended the awning, one side was shorter than the other and we had a huge amount of slack on one side. It seems that we have rafters that are two different lengths, 54" & 66". Is this correct and if so, how do we fully extend the awning and get the slack out?

Hi

Any chance of posting a picture so we can see what you are referring too?

The awnings do have male/female ( 1 part slides inside the other) top side rafter on each end. One part attaches to the roof line, the other slides up the lower awning arms and attaches to the awning by the rollers.

In the middle area of that upper rafter is a black knob that you loosen to allow the rafter to slide and then tighten to make the rafter is rigid once the awning is fully out. The rafter arm parts may be 2 different lengths, but the piece that attaches to the roof of the front set and the rear set are the same lengths. And the part that attaches to the roller end are the same length on the front and rear set. They may be different from the part that is attached to the roof line then the awning roller.

Here are some pics of ours setup. Tell us what is not looking right? Do not know what you mean by how do you fully extend the awning? Did this awning ever set up correctly? Or is this the first time and maybe they gave you wrong parts?

Maybe you can describe the steps in order on how you open the awning and then we can tell what does not seem right. First off, I'm assuming, you loosened both the front set and rear set of upper awning rafter little black knobs when the awning is up against the camper ( the black knobs that are on top awning rafter, one at each end the awning) so they will slide out?

Hope this helps

John

Also check out youtube.
How to Use the Awning on Your RV - YouTube

There's another thread here someplace that shows another possibly older awning, A&E I believe, that has a little different parts, but generally the same procedure.

Bunjin,

Great link! I had forgot about the U tube's which they seem to have something on almost everything now a days. Some better than others though. The awning to a person new to these and never been showed the Right sequence before, can be a hand full.

Thanks John. I've attached pictures that show our problem. The problem lies in the fact that the main rafters that attach to the roof are not the same length. The front set is 54" and the rear set is 66". This creates the slack that we cannot get out. It looks like we need to replace the front set rafter with one that is 66".

Thanks also Bunjin for the YouTube link. That was very helpful!

OK, that is the problem... the parts need to be the same length

Odds are high the long one is correct and that side opens all the way.

See if this helps,. off the Dometic site. https://www.dometic.com/53b512af-a62...b02db9e6.fodoc

Make sure the series is right, I just picked SunChaser but do not know if this is your model. Here is the main site
https://www.dometic.com/enus/America...ctdataid=70425

If you can track down the right part number, then do a hit on the web for that. Shopping around you can find the parts

Here is one place you have have to call for just the part you are after. I'm sure they can get it. https://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/...0-%20A%20&%20E

But shop around and check a local dealer, the freight may cheaper or they do not change. Total deal might be cheaper or not.

Good luck

John

Also, I'm assuming the awning is vinyl, if it is you can use bleach and water to clean up the mold on the awning. Mix us a basic solution in a bucket, unroll the awning, using a car pole brush, wipe it on all the way up to the roof line. Roll it up, wait 5 to 10 minutes, unroll it and be amazed... Stubborn spots do again. Hose rinse off well, both sides when done. If the awning is cloth, "do NOT use bleach" need another product to clean the cloth ones. Here are the user instructions along with cleaning. https://www.dometic.com/b58f868e-d3d...6bf6ace6.fodoc
