Low Profile Air Conditioner

I tried backing my new to me 2006 sunline 2499 into an enclosed storage spot but it looked to tight.

Does anybody know how many inches you would loose by switching to a low profile air conditioner and what this would involve. eg same or different wall thermostat, same or different ceiling shroud?

Thanks!

ps Thanks JohnB & SunlineFan for your expertise in helping inspect & learn about the 2499!!!

Hi Rod,

A few things, in the Dometic AC world there are 3 main parts of the AC unit.
-The roof unit, the part that mounts on the roof.
-The air box, the part you see on the ceiling inside the camper
-The control box & T stat, this is the controls for the roof unit.

The original Brisk Air model AC unit (model series 57915.xxx) on your camper now, (a 13,500 BTU unit) has been discontinued by Dometic. You can still get some parts for them.

Dometic has come out with a Brisk II Evolution ((model series 457915.xxx) to replace the original Brisk Air. Not sure how many inches you are looking for less in height, but there is not a lot of change between the standard Brisk II and the original Brisk Air in height but there may be some. Seems Dometic hides the overall height of the older Brisk Air's in their manuals, so I can't look up what your old one is. But, If needed, I have a few of the older 13,500 BTU Brisk Air's in the barn I can measure the overall height of what yours would be as a starting point. Just let me know if you need that.

This link will take you to Dometic's current day new AC unit's. https://www.dometic.com/en-us/outdoo...r-conditioners

In the new manuals, Dometic does put the overall height in the manual. And they offer a lower profile AC roof unit called the Dometic Penguin II 13.5K BTU. https://www.dometic.com/en-us/outdoo...ii-13.5k-75419 Go to Features & the Download section for PDF's of the offerings for details.

The Penguin is their lowest unit.

Heads up, there needs to be some digging done as odds are favorable you might have to change the air box in the ceiling and possibly the AC control box and T stat to work with the new Brisk II models.

I just went through upgrading an older Brisk Air 13,000 BTU to a Brisk II Evolution II Commercial 15,000 BTU unit, and we bought the new air box and the controls. I have this new unit in the barn now, and have not yet installed it. Still doing the roof repair etc. The 6 wire plug to run the roof unit looks the same, but the cold air supply duct from the roof unit into the air box may be in a different location forcing the air box change. I have not yet confirmed this. The old control box technically could plug into the roof unit, but your old Analog T stat stinks for temperature regulation. While you can upgrade the old T stat to a newer aftermarket T stat for like $30, the entire new control system from Dometic with T stat is like $110 pending where you buy it. And I'm not sure there is room in the new air box for the older analog control box to mount.

If you can handle the cost of a new roof unit, & possibly the air box, T stat, then we can drill down into the details on the air box/controls. The prices shown on the Dometic site are a guide. Where you buy the new AC unit will vary in cost. It is sort of all over the map right now on cost and shipping too. And I am not happy the way they ship the new roof units pending who you buy it from. This commercial AC unit came standard UPS. And they had it in the truck sideways standing up bouncing down the road beating up the box . The last commercial unit I bought in 2019 was on a pallet and came truck freight laying flat, zero damage to the crate/box. The new Brisk II's are so much lighter, they can now ship them however.

Hope this helps

John

A measurement on the original Brisk Air would be super helpful if you have one handy thats easy to get to. I cant find the height of the brisk air or brisk air 2. The penguin 2 I have read is under 10 or 9.5” above the roofline I’m assuming. I found a spec for the penguin 2 that was over 11” but I think that must be the total height including the part that drops into the 14x14 opening or the height of the shipping box?

Thanks!

Hi Rod,

I'll get you the above roof line dimension of your AC installed. Be back soon.

Hi Rod,

Your vintage 13,500 BTU roof AC unit is 14" tall at the center of the roof. I measured this on 2 different AC in the barn. The 14" is from the roof surface (again at the center of the roof) to the top of the AC cover with the roof gaskets compressed.

According to Domeitic's web site, the Penguin II 13.5K BTU unit https://www.dometic.com/en-us/outdoo...9?v=9105304179

Is 11 1/4" tall. It does not say of that is with the gasket compressed or not.

The gasket is 1" tall when new, and you tighten the roof mount bolts to gain approx. 1/2 the gasket compression, or on the 1/2" area.

You are going to gain about 2 3/4 to maybe 3" lower overall camper height by going with the Penguin II. Not sure that solves your problem or not.

Note: The roof is arched so it is the tallest at the center of the roof. Just noting this so you do not use a tape measure at the gutter rail to the ground as the center of the camper is higher.

Hope this helps

John

Thanks John, that helps a-lot, not as big of a height savings as I thought with the low profile!
