Key missing

Are the keys for the water inlet universal? I don’t have the keys to any of the outside hatches and wonder if I can simply order a universal replacement or not it’s a pre 2000’s model I believe I just got and will be posting pictures shortly for help with what year and model sunline it is. Not sure if I can get help with the key issues before that or not.
Thanks!

Welcome!

The standard RV key for outside compartments is CH751. This is not unique to Sunline, it is industry wide. If you have a friend with a camper, theirs may be the same. Fresh water tank fill hatch, storage compartments, shore line cord compartments all use the same key. The entry doors to the camper are different.

Most any local RV dealer would have them. Amazon has them, the pricing seems way too high, and if you have a key, odds are a good local key place can makes copies if they do not have one.

Some owners do change the locksets to make sure the standard key does not work. But I would say, it is a small percentage of them. Pending the age of the lock set, sometimes the 751 number is stamped on the lock set.

Good luck and hope this helps.

John

The CH751 did become pretty standard starting in the '90s, but there were other keys used prior to then. I'm not sure if they were standard or not.

I bought a CH751 and it did not appear to work, it seemed to fit in but wouldn’t turn the locks on any one the compartments unfortunately. It is a 1984 so it’s possible this was before the implementation?

It's probably before. Both my old '86 and current '79 didn't use a CH751 anywhere. It's possible they could have been changed at some point but the fresh water door on the '86 looked original and was a totally different style.

You think I’ll have to get a locksmith in that case? Or is there a way to open and replace the lock without worrying about that cost? Thanks

You can try calling an RV dealer to see if they have someone with some old keys who could help get it open. I'm sure that same plastic water inlet was used on multiple brands of trailers.

If that doesn't work, there are two options- put a screwdriver in and try to bend/pry the door open, or drill the lock out. There's likely a piece of plastic that the lock locks against, so you only need to bend the door maybe 1/16" of an inch. Otherwise the less risky way is to drill out the lock from the outside, which ruins the lock, but at least you can put a screwdriver in and open it then.

For hatch doors, if you can access them from the inside, just take a phillips screwdriver and unscrew the locking tab from the inside. The door will swing open and you can go back outside, remove the whole lock by removing the big nut, and replace with a new one. Depending on the new lock you get, you may choose to reuse the old locking tab to have it catch better.
