jackknife couch comfort ? Is there such a thing?

Hoping I can get some suggestions here... my 21 year old son sleeps on our T1950 Jackknife couch / bed ( yes we are blessed he still comes camping when he can with his parents ! how fun is that ! )

Anyway, he is a big guy, and the split / uneven levels of the bed are not so comfy... he says.. he seems to sleep quite soundly !! but is there anything that you folks use to ease the comfort.. with a couple of things in mind.. 1. we have the small trailer, so really no extra room for big things ie: blow up mattress 2. we have tried the air mattress.. seems too HIGH once blown up.. 3. currently dragging out those thin blue foam pads.. but storage during day is a pain...

was thinking ?? pillow top pad ? but$$.. so .. I thought I would try the forum for ideas..... THANKS in advance !!

how about a memory foam topper??? Once everyone is finished with showers and you wipe down the shower stall....it could be stored in the shower and then close the shower door.....???? When GS camped with us - that is what we did!

About $50. for a 2" one, up to about $70.-$80. for a 3-4" one.
Ck. Ebay to compare prices. They do work well.

Tweety
We bought a large foam egg crate; cut it to 2 sofa sizes; put the 2 pieces together bumpy sides together; made a cover from an old bedspread. Since we got rid of the jacknife sofa and only have cushions we can leave the topper on the sofa 24/7. In your case you'd have to put it in the shower...total cost $10.

Jacknife couch comfort, jumbo shrimp, corporate ethics, military intelligence, airline food, easy payment, good lawyer, even odds. Enough said?

Sorry, I just had to throw that in there.

Hmm, I think my parents feel just the opposite...I think they're just sick of me!

But on the bed issue, I've yet to find any good solution. I'm very picky about the bed situation and don't sleep real well on it period. The best so far has been the air mattress. Yes, I'm way up in the air, and yes, it's hard to get on and off of, but it's fairly comfortable once up there. I have tried the eggshell thing in the past, as well as combined with some blankets to fill the gap more. Sure, it's better, but I still don't think it's great. I roll around a lot, so I wake up every time I would roll on or off the filler, which I did with the big valley anyway.

Even though you don't have this choice at your availability, the pull out sofa beds that are available in a lot of RVs now just don't cut it for me either. The mattress is extremely uncomfortable (thin) to me and the main support for the mattress is cables and bars, which I end up feeling all night long. There's a product out there through the Improvements Catalog that is designed for the folding beds that's basically a big piece of plastic (that folds) and can slide between the mattress and the frame to make a solid surface. I have a thin (1" ish) topper thing on the mattress, but it doesn't cut it either- when the bed folds, it gets folds in it that aren't easily stretched back out. I really need to get some foam, and I think the frame system could handle it on top of the mattress.

This won't help you either, but so far the best thing I've found is to fold down the dinette and put the air mattress on that. I know you don't have one, but you can keep it in mind for the future. The dinette is much more solid and sturdy than the couch. This is probably the most labor intensive method (the sofa bed is easiest), but it's worth it for the decreased movement and flex of the air mattress. I'm not a small person though, so the bed needs to be quite sturdy for me.
