How to Test Emergency Exit Window - Saturn T1550

Hello Sunline Club!

Has anyone ever operated the Emergency Exit Window
on a Saturn T1550. Mine is a 1988 and I just got it.

I'd like to try out the Emergency Exit Window to be sure it opens, but
don't know what happens when you open it.

Does it just FALL out onto the ground? Is it HINGED???

Is it hinged on the SIDE or the TOP?

I see the two red handles on the left side...If I lift them up...where do I push to open it??

Does the screen have to come off somehow first???

Will I be able to close it again???

Thank you all!

Hi Mark,

In this case, posting a pic of your window inside and out can help. I know a good amount about the newer Sunline exit windows, but I have not seen all the older Sunline ones.

As a generic answer, (this may or may not fit your window)

Yes, you pull out the screen inside first. Many have a handle and an easy pull out system.

Many have the window hinged if this is not a sliding window. Hinges are many times at the top.

There is a latch system, many times on the bottom and when you unlatch it, you push the window open it a little at the bottom, you can allow fresh air to come in. Thus the need for the screen to keep the bugs out.

The latch usually unhooks from the window frame and stays attached to the window itself. The window then hinges/pivots all the way out beyond 90 degrees open and you climb out.

Go outside the camper and look for hinges on the window frame, look at the top in most cases. If you see the hinges, then the window hinges out like I described.

Hope this helps.

John

Thank you JohnB!

I looked more carefully and devised a plan.

My biggest concern was that the window was not hinged and might just pop out.

So, after tapping a hammer against a wooden block against the presumed opening part, I cranked the window wide open and then FROM THE OUTSIDE, reached underneath to the TOP lip and began to pull.

My reasoning was that if the window was not hinged, at least I'd be there to catch it! Pulling from the top ridge also gave a fair amount of leverage!

Alas...it IS hinged and opens like a door.

Once opened, I cleaned all around the frame and seals and used 3M Dry Silicone Spray to get things moving very smoothly. Also got a couple of new "Emergency Exit Window" stickers to brighten things up a bit!

Some pics!

One Mystery is How to Remove the Screen?? I see this Clip, but not sure how to operate it without breaking it:

Thank you John!

Thanks for the info! I just had that window out a couple of weeks ago and could not figure out how the window works. I was never able to get it to open. I will look for the hinge.

Thomascine,

The number one tip is to crank the window OPEN all the way and then PULL the window open from the OUTSIDE.

Reach underneath the top piece of window, grab the frame underneath and PULL.

The block and hammer probably isn't necessary -- but I had done that first.

Once I saw where to pull it from with the window cranked open and had sufficient leverage, it was not that hard to pull it open -- especially if you know which side will open first -- the side with the handles and it will swing out and to the left. So grab underneath the right edge (looking from outside) and PULL.

After cleaning the seals all around both the frame and window and putting the Dry Silicone all around -- it works extremely fluidly now. Swings open and closed with ease.

One final tip -- may need to lift up, ever-so-slightly on the window to get it back into the frame and closed. Easier from the outside if you have a 2nd person to latch it on the inside after you push it shut, but can be done with one person -- just need to know to lift it a little bit to get it in the frame.

Bets wishes!

Feels great knowing it will open, if ever needed!

Give it a whirl!
