Can you haul with full water tank?

I have a 1995 T1550 and I was wondering if you can haul the camper with a full water tank? We are camping in October and I would like to fill the tank from water from home instead of the campgrounds water. Also how big of a holding tank does my camper have? Would it be enough water to last from Thursday afternoon to Sunday evening.

JennyC,

Hi. I have a 1983 T-1550 and love it. I sure would love to see pictures of your '95.

Your fresh water tank is 24 gallon capacity. Gray is 21 and black (septic) is 10. Keep in mind a full fresh water tank adds 200 lbs (24 x 8.33 lb/gal.)to your load. That is a lot believe it or not. It is a force that is in motion. It puts more stress on the tank and hoses then I would want personally. I wouldn't travel with a full tank if possible.

As far as will it last? That depends on how many people, what is it being used for;i.e. toilet, washing hands and dishes and drinking. I haven't at this time drink my water from the trailer's tank. I have had this trailer for only a year and I'm still working to have it be what I feel is ok (drinking water wise). I carry a 6 gallon container that I fill up at the campground for drinking. To date I have camped only at state campgrounds with no hook-ups.

I hope this helps.

Also click on the link below to see the brochure for 1995. It has some info you may be able to use. Click the download button.

Just doing dishes and flushing you should be fine showers every night unless you try to conserve you probably would run out.

Thanks Tim. I didn't think of showers. My T-1550 has had the shower removed by PO. I use the campgrounds.

The previous owner's complaint with the T-1550 was the 10 gallon septic tank. Kinda small.

Hi Jenny,

I do not know your fresh tank mounting system or where it is located in the camper. I'll pass along a few things for you to check out.

The tank holding system and how it holds the tank to the camper, see here on my 2004 camper. Sunline created a special heavy cradle to hold the fresh tank. This cradle helps be able to take the heavy road bounce out of the tank. I do not know what year Sunline started doing this. I have seen on other brands they use nothing much more than 2 plain pipe straps holding up a 40 gallons tank which is scary for sure.

If yours has the cradle system, then I would say it is OK to tow with a full tank. I do this with ours and I do not have concerns.

However, I would not tow long distances on highway with the black or gray tank the way they are supported.

If yours just has 2 plain 1" wide straps, and that is it, I would be concerned towing with it down the highway. If you want to post a pic of it we can look unless someone else with a 1995 model knows.

Also a heads up not knowing what your tow vehicle is, filling the fresh tank may add increased tongue weight or decrease it pending where the tank is. This may or may not be a problem, just passing along in case you have a small TV. Where is the tank on your camper? if it is forward of the axle, tongue weight will go up, the closer to the front it is, the more it will rise.

If the tank is over the axle or just in front of it, then tongue weight may not change much. If it is behind the axle, it will go down and that is a concern too.

Hope this helps and good luck

John

Hi bunjin,

This may be a play on words however I found out on my system and the way Sunline rated the fresh water system in 2004, tank capacities and system capacity are not the same.

I looked up the 95's and it says "24 gallons system" capacity. With the key word being "system"

On mine it is listed as approx a 42 gallon system. So I thought I had a 42 gallon fresh tank. After some investigation, measured the tank itself, did some math and h'mm, no way is that tank 42 gallons. This is how mine shanks out.

6 gallons in HW heater
approx 3 to 4 gallons in the piping system
32 gallons in the fresh water tank
-----
Approx 42 gallons.

When I haul fresh water, I fill the HW tank and the piping and then top off the tank. At the CG, I have a usable, approx 31 to 32 gallons of water before the pump sucks dry.

Using this assumption on Jenny's camper, here is a guesstimate short of tank measurements.

6 gallons in HW heater,
1 to 2 gallons in piping
approx 16 gallon fresh tank.
--------
24 gallons

There is probably 14 to 15 gallons of usable water before the pump runs dry.

Short of measuring the tank, if the 1995 catalog follows the 2004 catalog for the same set of words, she has 14 to 15 gallons of usable water.

Have you ever measured yours? (there is 231 cubic inches per gallon.) Curious if the older campers follow this as well.

On the black and gray, they seem to fall in line with the tank size as water is not normally stored in the piping.

John

Thank you everyone for the information. I will have to look this weekend to see were my tank is and how it is attached. My tow vehicle can more than handle it. I have a 2012 Ram 1500 V8 Hemi 4x4

We would not be using our shower it doesn't have a shower head in it anymore and it is a very small shower. We would be using the showers at the campground and the bathrooms. We will be using the bathroom in the camper for one child mostly as it is hard to take her down to the camp bathrooms. We might be using water for dishes but not sure yet. We do all our eating, cooking and dishes outside still. We are new to the travel trailer camping. We also still camp with a water jug as we still rough some places. This will be our first time camping with it in cold weather. The state park does have water that you can fill in your tank when you get there at the dump station. It is very hard water. I will try and see if I can post a picture of my camper.

JennyC,

That is a real nice looking trailer! I would like to see interior pictures when you get a chance.

As you enter the Trailer there should be a pull handle on a door on your left, at least My 1983 T-1550 has it. My 1996 T-2053 has a panel with 4 square socket screws. In any event, it you open that area you will see your fresh water tank. Makes for easy viewing when filling tank with water. Esp. with hose.

JohnB,

Thanks for the info on "System" capacity vs "Tank" capacity. That makes for some interesting head scratching I was having. My 1983 T-1550 has a fresh water "system" capacity of 18 gallons whereas JennyC's 1995 T-1550 has 21 gallon. Did Sunline increase tank size or did they just change "system" terminology? By this do I by chance have a 18 gallon tank?????

I had hoped to check this out this weekend by measuring tank capacity. Just didn't have the time.

Also, JohnB I was hoping and will do, is post pictures of my fresh water tanks for both my 1983 T-1550 and 1996 T-2053. They both have the tanks on the floor of the trailer, not anything like the pictures you posted. I will take pictures. I still am a little leery about full fresh water tanks and travel. My experience with both of my trailers is that Sunline or PO's, not sure which left a bit to desire on the feed line connections. I will get into that more later....hopefully with pictures.

Hi bunjin,

Yes, some floor plans have the fresh tank inside and some have them outside. Do not really know why??

The T2553 is a front kitchen camper. The fresh tank is inside under the bed in the back. The T2499 is a rear living camper, bed room up front, and the tank is under the camper. That is the pics I showed.

The T2753 has a rear bed room, center kitchen, front living area. The fresh tank is inside under the coach.

The T1950 has the fresh tank under the bed in the back.

From a weight and balance perspective of the camper it does not matter if the tank is inside or under the camper, it is location in relation to the axles and tow ball that counts.

I'm sure Sunline had a reasoning to the mount inside or out, it just does not seem to be intuitively apparent. Wonder if Sunline Fan knows this one?? Since Sunline did not make very many 3 season TT campers with heated tanks, that does not add up either to have the fresh tank inside as the black and gray are outside freezing when below freezing temps come. And FWIW, my T310SR does have the extended season tank compartment with heat, and the fresh tank is under the camper in the heated space. Along with the black and gray tank.

This might be a mystery....

Just as a comparison, here is the tank from our T1950, which measures 12"x12"x32.5" which figures out to 20.26gals, or call it 20 gals as dimensions were from outside of tank. My memory says Sunline calls our unit 24gal, which does not add up since we have a 6 gal water heater. Cannot get to my manual right now to check their specs.

I suppose it is possible but highly unlikely. It fits the opening under the bed and stretching forward under the sink. The pic shows it in place with the bed removed and its proximity to wheels. Sink and cabinets are just to the left out of the photo.

I filled my 1983 T-1550 last night by the light of the full moon....or at least nearly full moon pretty much covered by clouds, thus dark as all....well you get the picture I'm sure.

My tank has in black marker WS1500 or SW1500 (I didn't write it down and at my age...well you get the picture I'm sure)

I filled the 18 gallon "system" with 18 gallons of water....kinda. I splashed it all over the place. Next time I will put a catch basin under the fill spout. In any event I put at least 16 plus gallon into the tank filling it almost to the top (any more and it would have come out off the fill tube)

This morning it had settled to where the pictures show. I had really pumped the system as dry as I could so it may be that it worked itself into the plumbing lines and HW tank? If not it leaked out somewhere.

I just wouldn't feel comfortable driving with this tank or the one on my T-2053 really full. The T-2053 does have a venting system that the T-1550 doesn't have but both of my units had/have silicon caulk applied with clamps that just weren't that well applied. I have have them get pushed off inserting a filler hose. With water sloshing back and forth I just envision water leaking into the trailer while driving.

Others have posted some interesting photo's and data.

Oh, BTW, see the aluminum? It is the beginning of the wheel well. The tank straddles the axle very nicely.

My 1996 T-2053 tank is in the same place by the door (tongue end door), under the sink, forward of the axles. I will try to get photos of that soon.

I can see on my T2553 why the fresh water tank is on floor under bed. Center bath puts black above and behind rear axel. Very little room between black tank and rear frame. Gray tank sits a bit forward of that over front axel. Under sofa is heater and piping. So the only place left would be under the kitchen where you have weight of the appliances plus the battery and propane tanks on the tongue. When full would throw all weight forward of front axel and minimal weight behind.
