Campsite Stabilizing

We are new to the “larger” camper experience (“larger” being relative) and used our T-1950 for the first time this past weekend. After we leveled and stabilized we noticed an irritating wobble from front to back. Are those tandem axel wheel locks made to counter this movement or is there something else I should be doing?

Hi Paul,

You shouldn’t have a lot of wobble, particularly forward and backward. It sounds like you may not have had your stabilizer jacks tight enough or they loosened up, which they often do because of ground settling.

Did you have wheel chocks in? Do you have the scissor type stablizer jacks? It's best to put blocks under the scissor type jacks so they don't get extended too far, that will help in stabalizing the trailer. I find that if the stablizer jacks get exteneded too far, we feel more wobble.

I put 2 wheel chocks between the tires, wedged into each tire in either direction, then stabilize the trailer. I put blocks under the stabilizer jacks then extend the jacks until they’re snug, then turn them another ˝ - 1 turn.
We never had forward - backward movement or wobble.

This year I got one of the BAL locking wheel chocks,
http://www.campingworld.com/browse/s...k/skunum=11109. They seem to work a little better than the wheel chocks.

Hope this helps.
Hutch

Campsite Stabilizing

Thanks Hutch. That is the one I looked at at Camping World but didn't want to spend the money unless I could be sure it would improve the condition. I did have the stabilizers tight and wheels chocked but I was on loose gravel too and don't think the chocks had much effect. My old T@B actually had a mechanical handbrake so any movement was locked.

Thanks again, I'll try the wheel lock.

Hey Paul,

I still had some forward/backward movement. So, I decided it was time for the ole yellow plastic wheel chocks to be replaced. I had looked at the wheel locks that you place between the wheels and hold in place until you get em tight enuff to grab the tires, they were pricey and I didn't want to have to hold them up in the air until they grabbed the tires.

I decided on this: http://www.campingworld.com/browse/s...=5623&src=SRQB

They sit on the ground, you can hand snug them before ever needing to use the supplied rod to completely snug them up. And the price was right.

Let me tell you, there "IS NO" forward/backward motion at all.

Kitty

See if this helps any.

I'm into the build your self if I can type of things.

They help greatly. And after the tires cool, you snug them up again as the tires shrink. I use an old 1/2" deep socket wrench I have on them. I can also use them when I'm blocked up off the ground to level out the TT.

There are several versions of the home made type. Some use Pony clamps between them, some chain binders. All work about the same.

Roto Chock and Bal makes them too. They are metal and expand between the tires.

PS The tip Hutch said about the scissors jacks being extended full out and wiggling, H'mm never realized that but I can see it occuring. The stability could be affected when they are straight up and down. Learn something new every day.

Hope this helps

John

Campsite Stabilizing

Looks like the fix is to lock the two tires together to counter the roll. Thanks for the advise all.
