‘84 T1750 Heater won’t light

hi,

this tt is new to us, still running thru the systems. can’t seem to get the heater lit.

following the directions, but can’t determine if pilot lights or not? how can you tell?

also attaching two pics. does anything look amiss? where should i check voltages? also what does the little button/indicator do or mean? should it be sticking up, or flush? it doesn’t want to push to reset...

any help sincerely appreciated, tia

Can you find the model number of the furnace and brand and post? We may be able to find an owners manual on it for you. And better help troubleshoot. I am not fluent on the older ones, but can follow the service manual if we can find one.

NOTE: These are generic instructions and may NOT be specific to your unit. However seeing the manual "OFF-PILOT-ON" knob, these should suffice to get it going, PROVIDED the burner tube hasn't been populated by spiders and has cobwebs, the Gas orifice(jet) is plugged, or the Regulator is bad.

This is a manual light unit as noted by the "OFF-PILOT-ON". Similar in operation to older Home Gas Water Heaters.

The Red knob (OFF-PILOT-ON) is turned to the Left to pilot and push in and hold. Usually this type requires you to match light or use a grill lighter to light the Pilot.

Once it lights hold it in for a minute or so for the thermocouple heats up enough to open the gas valve to keep the pilot running. Then turn it fully LEFT until "ON" lines up with the Arrow. Temperature is set at the factory and NOT ADJUSTABLE.

When you set it to "ON", you should hear a "WHOOSH" that has a bit of Thump to it, then a RUSHING SOUND like a small Jet engine. That's the main burner lighting off from the pilot. If you don't get that within 5-10 seconds turn it "OFF" and wait 10 minutes. Then redo the Pilot procedure all over again.

As for determining whether the pilot is lit or not, you should have a viewing window or port you can see the flame thru. Like JohnB said, a Make and Model # will get specific results for you.

I am not familiar with the older furnaces either but looking closer at the gas valve at the top right next to the valve the brass colored square item looks like it might be a piezo lighter. If it is you would turn the red knob to pilot hold it in then push the center part of the lighter in making it click which would light the pilot. You may have to push it a couple times to get it to light. Anyone else please chime in on it.
