1991 Sunline T1550 brakes
Hi I have a 1991 Sunline T1550 that came with no trailer brakes. I took it to a trailer shop and they said I would need a new axle because my brake plate is welded to the axle. It has the wires for the electric brakes up to the plate. Does anyone know where I could get replacement brakes? It ha the Hayes Axle #11489 86 with a 3000Lb rating.
Thanks, Steve

Sounds like someone replaced the axle. It should have had brakes. Picture maybe?

I have a 1981 Sunline and just went through the same situation. The axle and hubs are all one piece and so finding the part was tricky. I have a trusted mechanic who owns a truck repair centre and he was able to have the axle made as the original size wasn’t available. Also, he will have the parts welded together as they don’t come like that anymore. All in, axle, hubs, wheels, brakes and tires just under $1000 Cdn. (Plus labour of course). Hope this is helpful.

brakes
Thanks for the advice you both gave me. I am going to see a friend who has a repair shop and see if he can help me either find brakes or an axle for the 1991 Sunline T1550. It's great to have this site when you need help with the camper. Hope you all have a blessed day!

What you probably can do is buy the bolt on assembly remove all the parts and put them on your welded backing plates. You brake drum should be all the info you need for size, diameter and width. E trailer has a pretty good selection of brake parts.

brakes
Thanks! That sounds like the best and most inexpensive way to get brakes for the T1550.When I measured my drum I think the size brakes I'll need are the 10" by 2 1/4" units.

If you cannot find an axle that will work, contact axle inc, these guys. AXLE Inc. - Towable Trailer Axle Specialists
I bought my new axles tubes from them, shipped to my house through UPS. They are a Dexter distributor and the can have a new axle made to fit right into your existing camper. They will tell you the needed dimensions you need
Hope this helps and let us know how this comes out. It’s a common problem on the older Hayes axles

My T1700 has welded backing plates. I did however have all the parts that made it a lot easier as it will for the OP next time! I'm kind of wondering if the previous owner gave up during a brake job because the only thing he could find were bolt on.

Hi Steve, I also have a 1991 T1550. Am about to take off wheels and check out the bearings. Planning a trip to the east coast from Ontario so am hoping to fix/maintain as many issues as I can beforehand. Do you happen to know what type of bearings are on these?

bearings
Hi Tosia, I can't remember what size bearings they were. I took my old ones that needed to be changed to my local NAPA auto parts and they matched them up for me with some new ones. That might work for you as well if yours need replacing.

Thanks for the replies!
My nephew helped get the tires off yesterday... and both sets of bearings need to be replaced. But, we couldn't get the brake assembly off. So an appointment at a repair shop close by was obtained for tomorrow. Am thankful that I could get the camper in so quickly so hopefully we can still take our trip to the east coast starting on August 15th !
